Q: Addicted to Vicodin & Ephedrine

This is the first time i've ever written anything about my problems. I have been addicted to vicodin for about 6 years, the past 3 years increasingly worse. On days that I am plentifull in pills I will take 18-20 5/500's in a day. Well, this is only the tip of the iceburg - i've also taken ephedrine for over 10 years - a lot of ephedrine. On a day when I have no other drugs to take I will take around 50 ephedrine in a day. On a day that I have vicodin I will alternate the vikes & ephederine every four hours. It's really scary to see these numbers written down. I am a 31 yr old female - my doctors tell me i'm healthy but they have no idea what I am doing to my body. I've come to a point now that I have to stop but I don't know how. Anomosity is a big issue with me, I don't want family or friends to know any of this. My husband knows a little - but has no clue how bad it really is. I don't remember how to function sober. I can't imagine going through an entire day feeling the way I do when I wake up in the morning. The vikes are becoming too hard to get and too much money and too much of a hassle to get when I do have the money - so I can see that drug fasing out - but the ephedrine is at every gas station in my town for $5. I guess I would like to hear from others... Thanks

I have no idea how you are going to get help with this other than to talk to your family doc about your issues. They are supposed to be impartial and also confidential when dealing with these issues. There are medicines availible to help you remove these meds from your life. There is no cure for the addiction and there is no easy way to detox but it can be easier with a support team around you. Your family doc should be the anchor in the support chain.

Both of the drugs you are taking are super dangerous and highly toxic to your liver. Tylenol/acetamenaphin is causing so many more deaths in the country that doctors are scratching their heads because they cannot help people with liver faliure due to years of tylenol abuse/use.

The first step is over, you know you have a problem, now you need to take the next step, confide in your doc (if you can) and get the necessary help to bring your life back to you.

Where are you? Do you have any sort of mental health place near you that can help with addiction? I'd do some checking on the web for drug counceling near you. And i'd definitely tell your husband about how severe the problem is. He's going to want to be there for you and help you through it.

Have you ever considered going to a methadone clinic for help? Methadone is prescribed to patients that are addicted to opiates. There should be a methadone clinic somewhere in your area. You just need to find it. You can look online or you may even be able to call a pharmacist in your area and ask them. Methadone is very effective and has been treating opiate addiction for years. Look into is and see if it's something that you would be interested in. I know many people that is on this program and it has truely saved their lives. Good luck to you!
