Q: Counting Calories?

I only want to lose around 20 pounds and don't really have a set time to do this. Mainly, I want to feel better about myself. I've been counting my calories and exercising to lose weight. I was just wondering if this was a good idea. Is counting calories a good way to lose weight? How much should I try to eat in order to lose weight (right now i've been trying to keep it around 1400). I'm just a little confused about what you should and shouldn't eat, such as calories or fats or carbs.
Also, i'm not sure if my exercise is enough. I'm in college and walk to my classes everyday. (i might spend an hour walking in a day) i'm also in a jazz dance class twice a week and the days I don't have that class I do carmen electra's aerobic striptease. Is there anything I should add to this?
