Adderall Addiction - Is This Unhealthy? Posted: 01-10-06 20:51pm
Hi, i'm ryan and i'm 16 years old. I was
diagnosed with adhd a few months back, I
believe it was august or september. We
tried ritalin but it didn't work for me,
so we put me on adderall. It helped
handle the adhd problem, but after a while
I realized I was taking them to up my mood
instead of to focus in school. It helps
focus me, but at the same time it gets me
high. I am supposed to be on 60mg a day
but lately I have been pushing 80, and
throughout the day I get the feeling that
without the adderall I have no confidence
and I start to obsess (i was also
diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive
disorder). I don't know if i'm
technically addicted to the drug, but do
any of you have any possible alternatives
for me to try that involves getting me off
of the adderall completely and helping me
just live my life free of pills?
Thank you.

I feel for you. I am not qualified to
tell you what you should take to replace
the adderall, but you need to immediately
consult your doctor about this. 80 mg a
day is quite a high dose for a 16 year
old, and is extremely dangerous to your
health, particularly your heart and
nervous system. I was addicted to
adderall for a year and I went from taking
10 mg a day to 100mg to satisfy my need
for the drug. I also became depressed,
anorexic, and developed serious anxiety.
I know it feels amazing, but trust me,
that wears off eventually and you just
feel wired. I actually noticed that
after 6 months of taking the drug I became
counter-productive and my obsessive
behavior increased. Like, I said I am
not a professional but someone who really
does have add or adhd has a chemical
imbalance that adderall is supposed to
even out. Therefore, you should not be
feeling "high" as you said if you are
taking your dosage, you should just feel
normal and calm and focused. Please see
your doctor and try another med, perhapd
strattera. Good luck!
