I just started on nuvaring a month ago and I haven't had any experience with hormonal birth control before, so i'm really concerned about some side effects i'm having.

The first week I had some mild nausea, cramps, bloating, and brown discharge that went away after a couple of days. Everything was fine for the next 2-2 1/2 weeks. I took my ring out on time and felt fine for the two days after. My period started on the 3rd "off day," which was good because it coincided with my regular schedule. However, that night I got very sick. I got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and vomited. I was very sick for the next 2 days then started getting better. I had cramps like I normally do, but my cramps lasted 4 days instead of 2 and my flow lasted 6 or 7 days instead of 5. Nothing big, just adjusting, I guess. I put a new ring in last night and this morning I have more cramps as well as cramps from diarrhea.

I'm really concerned about this. I thought the sickness might have been related to the ring, but after getting better with no apparent ties to it other than coincidental timing, I thought otherwise. But now i'm not so sure. I really don't like getting cramps (even light) every time I start a new ring and i'm afraid of getting sick again on my off week. I know they say to give bc 3 months so your body can adjust, but I was given a 2 month supply instead of 3 because they were running low and i'm not so sure I want to go back on it. I've always been really healthy, so I don't like this.

Any experience or advice would be appreciated.

Birth control does cause nausea and vomiting in many women the first few months of use. After you take your ring out your hormones suddenly drop to allow a period, this drop can also cause nausea and other effects too. Many women find that their peirod cramps are helped by hormonal birth control, but some womens cramps can be made worse. Your side effects are perfectly normal, but if you have any problems I suggest seeking advice from your doc.

Yeah, i'm not really sure if my sickness was caused by the ring or not. I feel much better today, my cramps are gone, i'll just wait and see if things go better this month. Fingers crossed. And thanks. I do plan on talking to my doc about my symptoms.
