I had a broken neck back in 1977 and today suffering from severe neck pain and numbness in my hand. My doctor has tried several types of medication and finally I have been on muscle relaxors and pain pills. These drugs make me woosey and I am afraid to go to work while taking them but I need to take 2 soma 350 and 2 darvacets every 4 to 6 hours. The nurse at work suggest going on std and the ltd. Can I do this? If so, what am I entitled to, I have 4 minor children as well. I cannot work and take drugs, if I do I can be fired from the companymif I get injured or hurt someone else. Am I entitled to ss and disability for myself and children?

You are possibly eligible for ss benefits, but remember that the maximum per family benefit is around 1800/month. What happens is you apply for benefits and get turned down, something like 90% are turned down, then you go before a judge who ultimately decides your case, takes any where between 1 1/2 to 2 years for the process to be completed. Also you have to wait until you are off work for 6 mos before applying for benefits. Again remember the maximum family benefit is around 1800/month. You would be awarded what ever amount you are entitled, then your children would split the dependent award equally between them. An example is your are awarded 1200/month, then your children would recieve 150 each, that totals 600/month, which is the maximum benefit.

On another note, I would say it is the soma making you woosey, have the doc try robaxin. The darvecet is such a small amount that it shouldn't be causing the side effects mentioned. People with chronic severe pain hardly get any of the drugged side effects from their narcotics. For example I take 100mg of oxycotin around 60mg of loratab 4500mg of robaxin daily and i'm always sober as a judge. Good luck to you.

Pain Meds
My company has a policy thet if you are on medication and get injured you will be terminated. I do not want to hurt anyone nor myself. I am trying to get on std and then ltd and not sure what to do. My doctor has me off work right now until I see a specialist. I broke my neck in 1977, I was paralized for 18 months and now many years later after being on percocets and soma for the past few years my pain in my neck is severe to the point I am taking 2 soma 350 and 3 percocets a day. I am fused and wired up after two surgeries in 1977. My left hand is numb feeling and my right hand as well on my finger tips are numb. I am a manager in a manufacturing plant and I requested my primary care doc to take me out of work until I can see a specialist. He did so. My company has a policy that states I cannot be on pain meds while at work. When I take my meds, they make me feel woozy and I actually bumped into a metal table today. My left arm jumps every now and then as well. My question is....Do you think they will put me on std and then ltd? I have limitations on turning my neck from side to side and it hurts severly. The pain meds only take off the edge.

I really don't know, and as far as short term disability that will be up to your company, sounds like they have a private plan. I would definitely get to a neurosurgeon and see if the problem can be fixed. I feel for you I really do, ive been in your shoes so to speak. I was put out of work and could not even get so much as an interview it was a long process (almost 2 yrs) and the money I get a month now is nowhere near what my salary used to be. I would talk to your doctor about switching muscle relaxers to robaxin, less woozy side effects. Wish you the best of luck
