Sedatives And Diverticulosis
Posted: 01-07-06 19:23pm

I have diverticulosis and a redundant colon. I take dilantin for epilepsy.

I have all the necessary tests, barium enema and colonoscopy to verify condition. But my question I guess does any one take a sedative for diverticulosis?

I find that while I take fiber supplement, psyllium I do at times get discomfort from minor abdominal pains.

I cannot say that a treatment method for diverticulitus would be a sleeping pill but it is certianly not a contridicted medicine for insomnia. If you cannot sleep because of the pain from your diesease, ambien or lunesta or maybe even valium could be prescribed.

The valium may help relax your bowels and easy some of the pain.

I wish I could help more but I would definatly ask your doc.

I will try to avoid a sedative if possible at moment as it may add to the effect of dilantin.

Was advised however by a doctor on another net site allexperts that a small amount of clonazepam, half of a .05 would be okay and might help if problem persisits. Also suggested tylenol but not aspirin.

Tylenol is much less destructive on the system than asprin. Although too much tylenol will quietly destroy your liver. Its a catch 22 but at least the tylenol will not bother your diverticulitus.

Don't be afraid to go to your doc and ask for a sedative if you have trouble sleeping. He/she should be willing to help you sleep given the fact that you are in miserable pain all th time anyway. My dad has chrones and I was diagnosed with ibs while I was in the navy and my pain was nothing compared to yours or my fathers.

Good luck,
brian

Better today. Did take some tylenol but a minimum dose. One regular.

I still after some years yet to figure out a diet excluding the fiber that works for me. Problem was not too bad until gall bladder surgery three years ago and then it has gradually got worse over time.
