Nodules On Lungs
Posted: 12-22-03 22:14pm

I have been having shortness of breath, trouble taking a deep breath and gaining a bit of weight. It hurts to breath. The doctor ordered an x-ray and called this evening to tell me there are "nodules" on one of my lungs. He has oredered a cat scan. I don't smoke but did 20 years ago.

Is the doctor looking for cancer? He said that the nodules could mean a variety of different diseases but didn't want to discuss possiblities without the cat scan. What other diseases might they be? I am imagining all sorts of things and would rather have a general idea than to be kept in the dark this way.

Thank you for any assistance.

It could be pulmonary actinomycosis a bacterial lung infection caused by actinomyces or propionibacteria or rheumatoid lung disease. Those are the only two things I could find on the internet. But I am sure there are a lot more. Don't worry too much yet, but let us know what happens.

You should demand a pet scan. This showed two additional areas on my grama's lungs that the cat scan had missed two times. If it is cancer, the cells will absorb the glucose solution that they inject you with, and then you'll know for sure. She was told two years ago that she had nodules as well. Good luck!

Hi I am going thru a similiar thing as you a year and a half ago they discovere 2 nodules in my right lung both about 1cm in size, I had to wait for ct scan six nmonths at thatbtime they didnt change its been a almost 2 years now and they havent changed this is how they determine benign or not if they dont grow in a period of time they comsider them benign.It is very frustrating I know my mom died of lung cancer becaus eof that they will be checking e every year for the rest of my kife hard for peace of mind.I would recommend a et scan I insisted on it and I got one it came up normal the reason why I insisted on one was I wanted to know if there was anything else in my body if the kung was a secondary spot or not.After cat I would insist on pet for your peace of mind next thing is find out the size of the nodule 60 percent of all lung nodules are benign and its more of a percentage than that for nodules one centimeter and less hope all goes well and the most have to worry about is repeat cats like me

Dear gayle,
i was seen in the emergency room august 2002 for breathing problems. A routine chest xray was ordered along with an ekg. The emergency doctor asked me how long had I had the nodule on the upper right lung and had my primary doctor informed about the lung? I was stunned by her question! I had told her I knew nothing about my lungs except for being diagnosed copd in november of 2000. I have had numerous cat, pet, mri, and routine xrays. In november 2002 it was confirmed that I needed to have surgery, biopsy, and removal of the lung if in fact it was cancerous. On december 5, 2002 the lung and heart surgeon did in fact find the nodule to be cancerous and the upper right lobe was removed and resectioned the two lower lobes to the voided space. It was one of the most painful surgeries i've ever experienced in my life. I will tell you that I would recommend having the pet scan, it is an all day procedure with and without food and/or certain medications with an injection added on the second half of the procedure. Good luck! Dont delay

I have the same condition and the pulmonologist did not want to do a biopsy, but the hematologist/oncologist is insisting that he do it. I see the pulmonologist tommorrow for the results of a comparative ct study. He says that this will determine if he biopsies the nodules or not. Personally if the biopsy is not going to harm me, I would prefer that it be done so that I know what I am dealing with. I hope that you find consolation for your fears very soon.

here is a great image in high resolution explaining the facts below,
Mesothelioma Treatment and Asbestos lung cancer facts

Being exposed to asbestos can affect the risk of developing malignant mesothelioma.

Many people with malignant mesothelioma have worked or lived in places where they inhaled or swallowed asbestos. After being exposed to asbestos, it usually takes a long time for malignant mesothelioma to occur. Other risk factors for malignant mesothelioma include the following:

* Living with a person who works near asbestos.
* Being exposed to a certain virus.

Possible signs of malignant mesothelioma include shortness of breath and pain under the rib cage.

Sometimes the cancer causes fluid to collect around the lung or in the abdomen. These symptoms may be caused by the fluid or malignant mesothelioma. Other conditions may cause the same symptoms. A doctor should be consulted if any of the following problems occur:

* Trouble breathing.
* Pain under the rib cage.
* Pain or swelling in the abdomen.
* Lumps in the abdomen.
* Weight loss for no known reason.

Tests that examine the inside of the chest and abdomen are used to detect (find) and diagnose malignant mesothelioma.

Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. The following tests and procedures may be used:

* Physical exam and history: An exam of the body to check general signs of health, including checking for signs of disease, such as lumps or anything else that seems unusual. A history of the patient’s health habits, exposure to asbestos, past illnesses and treatments will also be taken.
* Chest x-ray: An x-ray of the organs and bones inside the chest. An x-ray is a type of energy beam that can go through the body and onto film, making a picture of areas inside the body.

Lung Nodules
Posted: 07-20-07 00:45am

I am undergoing a VATS biopsy in about three weeks. I have been showing nodules in my lungs for many years now, but in ther past year they have multiplied, and some have grown. I have Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome, but these nodules do not appear consistent with fibrosis, which is the last stage of HPS. Needless to say, I am beside myself over the procedure as well as what the results may show. One speculation is that it may be Sarcoidosis, which is not so great either. I have a preteen daughter, which makes all this harder to bear. Crying
