Hello. To make a long story short, I had a surgery and was told I had an arrythia (sp) and then and ekg was done and they told me I was fine and not to worry about it. However on my followup appt with the surgeon, I questioned this and he just told me to go to my doctor, as he looked at the anesthesialogists notes and told me I have a 2nd degree av heart block and the ekg showed frequest extra heart beats. I am terrified as to what all of this means. Also, if it was so bad, why didnt they tell me when leaving the hospital that something was wrong with me? Please respond, I am deathly scared. I am 35 and have 4 children and am scared I am gong to die. Thank you.

this depends on if it is type 1 or type 2, really. i know all this nonsense about "type one, type 2, first degree and second degree) probably confuses you, it is important to know wether or not you have type 1 or 2. ask your doctor. if he says type 2, you will need a pacemaker. the difference between type 1 and type 2 is this: type 1 involves missed p waves(the beginning of atrial electricity) wich can be benign and not cause anyhing. type 2 is erratic p waves that are not followed by PR intervals. this may cause your heart to go into panic after it completely misses a beat. This can ultimately result in passing out or sudden cardiac death. You need an artificial pacemaker installed if this is the case.
