My niece who is only 13 had a tumor in her breast area, which was removed as it had been growing rapidly. They said it was not cancer, but sent it on to another lab for further research, stating that they saw perhaps precancerous cells. Now with results back, they are putting this out to the board of the hospital as for what to do as they have never seen this in someone so young as my niece's age. Stating that they saw thyllodes which classifies the tumor as border, reacurrance statis: high. My question is, what is thyllodes, as I cannot find anything online for that word, it is spelled correctly according to my sister as she repeated it to me via her doctor giving her the correct spelling. He did not go into any real details for her, stating that he was not so sure himself. Mind you all that this is a very, very good hospital, known throughout the united states yet it does not seem that they are telling or giving any real information. Does anyone out there know this word and/or what it means, thyllodes???

Thyllodes
I am in the same situation as you, but it is my sister that had a lump in her breast removed on monday (1/19/04) and it was determined to be this "thyllidoes" word. She is in texas, and her physician said the same thing as far as knowing information about this condition or "tumor." she will undergo more surgery on the 29th of this month that will remove that breast since this word is related to cancer. Will you let me know if you hear of any different information? My sister is not as young as your niece is, but she is 45. Still our whole family is trying to research this. I will also post on here if I run across any other information.

Thanks,

This is what I found.. Phyllodes tumors are rare solid lumps that usually present as a mass found during a woman’s breast self-examination or on a routine physical examination. Smaller masses may be detected mammographically. Phyllodes tumors appear very similar to a benign lump known as a fibroadenoma. These lumps are usually well circumscribed and painless. Imaging evaluation including a mammogram and ultrasound is usually performed and when a solid lump is identified a biopsy is important to obtain tissue for accurate diagnosis. A phyllodes tumor cannot be differentiated from a fibroadenoma by a needle biopsy. This means that your doctor may not be able to accurately tell you whether a solid lump is a benign fibroadenoma or a phyllodes tumor. Risk factors for phyllodes tumor are rapid growth and size greater than 2 cms at the time of the evaluation. In many cases your doctor may recommend complete surgical removal of this mass to ensure that it is not an underlying phyllodes tumor.

Phyllodes tumors are not all cancerous. Many will be classified as benign and not require further evaluation. A skilled pathologist is needed to distinguish a benign phyllodes tumor from one with more aggressive malignant potential. In any event, women who undergo surgery for removal of a phyllodes tumor require close surveillance with followup mammogram and physical examination at regular intervals. Malignant phyllodes tumors are best managed with a wide excision of normal breast tissue around the tumor to obtain clean margins. In most cases, radiation therapy is not required. Very large malignant phyllodes tumors may require complete removal of the breast for management.
