Q: 3 Year Old Boy With Asthma And Frequent Croup

Hi. I have a 3 year old son that was diagnosed with asthma at 9 months old. At the time they put him on singular at night to treat his symptoms. That helped for a while but since he got croup the first time when he was 14 months old his asthma has escalated. He now is taking singular, claritan, pulmicort repsules through a nebulizer daily. He also take albuteral as needed. He seems to get croup everytime we turn around. He has had croup 8 times this year and is starting to sound croupy now too. My questions to anyone that can offer some advice are: 1) do you think that taking a steroid daily at his age will harm him or help him more?;2) are the two(asthma and croup) related or completely different topics?;3)are there ways to prevent croup from occuring so often?;4)should I keep him home or continue to send him to daycare 3 days a week? The reason that I asked the #4 is that my sons doctor suggested that I should quit my job and stay at home so that my child would not be around other kids that carry germs. I am torn with that decision because I feel that I would be hindering his social develoment as an only child if I keep him away from daycare and he will be starting preschool next year. If you have any advice then please help!!!

Hello, I know your situation all too well. My daughter who is 22 now, went through the same things your son is going though now. At the time did not have an option of staying home with her. She went to day care and preschool every day. I was not so concerned about "germs" as I was her being out in cold air when they played outside. Keep him bundled when he goes outside and only allow a short time when out playing. Keep him away from wood stoves, fire places and anyone who smokes. This creates havic!!! We could not go to public places where it was kept unusually warm in the winter, or the temp, was not regulated. My daughter seemed to stay crouped in the winter months and her asthma was worse, I do not believe it was because of socialization. She was in the hospital several times under the tent. She no longer requires inhalers or her nebulizer, but did recently require a breathing tretment at hospital er a couple weeks ago. My heart goes out to your little boy, a mother feels so helpless when there isn't anything we can do to control that constant cough, or they can't catch their breath....I do understand. This is just my opinion, I have no idea if or how asthma and croup are related. I do know what its like to be a mother! Just want you to know your not alone!

Re: 3 Year Old Boy With Asthma And Frequent Croup
sorry new at this. my son is 11 and still gets croup and asthma but i have it under control but it took me a while. try teaching him how to breath in the nose and out the mouth and not fast it takes a while for him to get the hang of it i watched a documentary on bbc about how to breath when having an attack it worked wonders he was diagnosed with cronic asthma and croup at nine months and spent the nest three or so years in and out of hospital, was on his pumps 4 to 5 times a day and on his machine at least twice a night so i really know how you feel. Keep him of anything with orange coloring and try keep the dust down till you get it under control, and i know its not easy. my sons attacks have gone from about twice a week to about 6 times a year.

Extremely eHealthy
I do not know if this is an issue..

Pets, cig smoking, and any other irritants really need to NOT be in the house.

My asthma lessened when the family cat was placed outside.
