Q: Raised area of skin in my arm pit
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 27th, 2005
While i was in the shower the other day I noticed a small raised area of skin in my arm pit. I though it was a bug bite it itched a little but didnt hurt. Now it is about the size of a large grape. It is hard and tender. And it hurts pretty bad.Im not sure if maybe the lymph nodes (spelling?) are just swolen and Im freaking out for nothing. I have been feeling pretty tired and sick all week I havent been able to eat. I get sick to my stomach at the though of food, I havent had any energy.I have been light headed and dizzy. All I want to do is sleep. But on top of that my husband just deployed to Iraq 3 weeks ago and it migh just be stress. Should I go to the doctor or wait it out to see if it goes away and what could it possibly be?..

Thank you

K.K.

General Q&A Answer A26
A visit to your doctor will help you identify the causes and conditions of swelling in your armpit. You can also more thoroughly explain to the doctor the symptoms you mention. It is difficult to diagnose your condition without a visual study of the affected area. Some possibilities include an inflamed skin gland (atheroma, phurunculus, hydroadenitis,) or an nflamed lymph node (lymphadenitis) . For the latter condition, however, there must be a primary source of infection. An enlarged lymph node, with no pain, in that area (armpit) MUST BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY. The other symptoms you mentioned are unspecific and may be result of many conditions, including stress.
