Q: Lightheaded + blood pressure
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 25th, 2005
My Blood Pressure constantly sits at around 90/55. When I stand up from lying down or sitting, I get very lightheaded, SOB, and vision gets blurry. I have to lean on the wall for support for about 30 seconds. This usually happens in the morning when I get up. I have tried to stand up slowly, but still get the symptoms. Is there something I should do?

General Q&A Answer A19
According to the symptoms you described, you might suffer from postural (orthostatic) hypotension. It is a disorder of the neuro-vegetative reflexes for fast blood pressure regulation. Failure of this mechanism leads to hypotension and decreased brain blood flow when the body changes position from horizontal to vertical. Besides standing up slowly, there are also some medications for this condition like “dihydroergotaminum” or “etilefrine hydrochloride”. Ask your doctor for this and control your anemia, which can also contribute to these symptoms.
