Q: Seroxat (paxil) And Alcohol?

I have been taking 30mg of seroxat each day for about 7 years now following 4months of panic disorder. I don't get panic attacks any more, but at times I have felt very restless, jittery and uneasy.

I have also always been a heavy drinker.

I was wondering if anyone else here drinks while taking anti-depressants and how/if it affects them?

Extremely eHealthy
That is a big no no, it should say that on the pill bottle or the info sheet, if you get one, or you can ask your pharmacist.
Good luck!
Happy holidays!

It really does depend on each person and their diagnosis. I have been taking Seroxat on and off for about 8 years. Drinking moderately is not a problem for me. Some people can drink whilst on anti depressants and others cant. I guess the time to see is when you are sleeping better and getting on with things without thinking about negative thoughts. Just take it easy....

Hi - feeling fine on it. Never vomited on Seroxat, although I have felt slightly sick in the first few weeks of starting a course on 20mg a day. After about 2 weeks this side effect passed.

Only side effects I do get now after 2 months of taking it are:

1. Sometimes have a dry mouth in the morning
2. sometimes sweat more than usual
3. vivid dreams - no bad thing really. Never had nightmares on it.
4. When I do drink alcohol, I need to take it easy as it seems to weaken the initial effects of alcohol and in a way can make you want to drink more than usual. Its not a problem for me as it depends on self control - and coping with depression over the years has made me very patient!

5. For some odd reason, my legs tend to twitch occasionaly when I sit down -- not a real problem but a weird side effect!

6. More yawning - I notice that I yawn more and feel a little more tired than I used to. I cope with this by having a cup of tea and going for a walk - this fixes it.

Overall though, I can honestly say that it works for me and Ill probably continue to take it in the future when I need to. Dont take all those negative comments about Seroxat to heart - for some people it does not work, but for thousands more, it is just what the doctor ordered.

The most important thing I found for me was to involve myself in lots of different things and keep my brain busy - even if depression was "telling me" that I couldnt be bothered. This gradually pushed out negative thoughts. Drugs are a help, but to get through depression faster, I believe that you have to occupy your mind by doing things. Exercise is a brilliant aid - it helps me a lot. I also had to learn how to deal with 4 hours sleep a night for about 2 weeks - its hard but I had to do it. If I kept waking up, I used to make a cup of herbal tea and read a novel - another way to take the mind off those bad thoughts.

A combination of things beats depression. And of course, people get better in the end.

Take care,

Luke

my side effects are: stoping my menstruation, yawning from time to time, i cannot do sport because of sensation of vomiting , after i eat first lunch, i have a sickness but not for a long time, and sometimes i feel some pricks in my fingers(hands and feet). I have been taking Seroxat for 18 months, my question is: it creates addiction? my diagnostic was neurosis with panic attacks.

I dont think it causes addiction - well not for me anyway. Perhaps in some cases a sort of dependence but not addiction in the way like tobacco or class A drugs like heroin or cocaine.

I expect some people will disagree with this. I guess the thing to remember here is that anti depressants are strong drugs and as such, some people may react atypically to them. After all, adding chemicals to the brain is not an exact science.

Re: sport and nausea.... How about modifying when you take the tablets? and maybe modifying meal times etc?? Do you take them the same time every morning? I find this helps with me. Perhaps try a short walk or cycle ride - this may lessen the effect of nausea...

I have been taking Seroxat tablets for 7yrs and I have also tried to come off of these tablets twice. Every time I get to 10mg I start to get the aniexty panicv attacks. Does anyone have any advice on how I can come off of these tablets.

Was told by the specialist at the time that these tablets would not be addictive. Do feel that the tablets makers should be taken to court for the pain we have suffered in taking these tablets. Please feel free to email any advice at andymills912@btinternet,com

Super seroxat.
Reply to andypool (above): I was also told seroxat wasn't addictive. I was also told it wouldn't cause weight gain (it has). But in NO way do i blame my doctor or seroxat's dispensers for this dependency or the side effects. Seroxat has lifted me out of the gutter i felt i was in. I have been taking this med for 5 years now. Prior to this i had been on tranquilisers & a hard drinker for 12 years. My diagnosis was anxiety that was severe in spells. The last 5 years have been my happiest since i was in my early teens. My moods tho have rollercoasted from happy as larry to being aggressive & bad tempered. I have drank alcohol minimally/moderately without many problems until recently when i have seem to be falling back into my previous symptons with an added depressive feeling. I will increase the dose from 20mg to 40mg to ease me through this. This may not have helped everyone who has tried seroxat but it has most CERTAINLY helped me & i can only thank the medical industry/makers for turning my life around.

seroxat helped me when I thought I was losing my mind (panic attacks), I'm still on the drug now 8yrs later, but only 10mg per day. I don't want to be on the drug anymore. I came off the drug for 6mths, lost 30lbs in that time and started drinking very heavily. I was falling back into my old state so had to go back on the drug. I'd rather not take the drug, but we can't win them all. I wouldn't talk bad of the drug, mind. Because back 8yrs ago it saved me from terrifying desperation.
