Sexual Health - Men Question Posted: 12-23-05 14:37pm
I am asking this about my husband
regarding fertility/pregnancy. My husband
works out regularly - he runs on the
treadmill and becomes hot and sweaty. He
also likes to use the sauna regularly. We
are trying to get pregnant w/ our 2nd
child and have been for about 6 months
w/no success. I asked him to stop using
the sauna because I have heard/read that
heat is not good for sperm
health/production. Should my husband stop
using the sauna if we are trying to get
pregnant? Can he alter his work out
schedule during certain times of the month
that might help us get pregnant?

It is true that high temperature has
negative impact on spermatogenesis but it
depends how long the testicles have been
exposed to temperatures higher than
normal. First, your husband can submit a
specimen for a sperm analysis
(spermogram). If the spermatozoids’
number is under 20.000/ml with living
spermatozoids less than 80%, then the
spermogram isn’t normal. In that case,
your doubts and suggestions about using
the sauna might be reasonable. But if the
spermogram is normal then YOU should be
examined by your gynecologist.
