Q: Severe Weight Gain While On Yasmin?

I started taking yasmin in march of 2004, when I weighed 120 lbs (and I was 17), which I think is an okay weight for me being that I am 5'4". Since I have started taking the pill, I have become a vegetarian, stopped eating sweets, stopped drinking soda, and become much more active as i'm busy with two part-time jobs as well as college. However, within a month of getting started on the pill, I started to gradually gain weight. Just a couple pounds a month. Almost two years down the road, I now weigh 160 lbs, and I can't seem to lose the extra pounds.

In march of 2004 I also started to take zoloft, which made me have less of an appetite so I lost a couple pounds (then of course after that I regained them back, and then some, probably because of yasmin). I know that sometimes zoloft can cause weight gain, but in my case I think it kept my weight down because when I stopped taking it in june, my weight skyrocketed from 140 to 160. For this reason I think that it's yasmin that's making me gain weight. I've been gaining about a pound a week.

I was tested for hypothyroidism a couple days ago, and the results were negative. My thyroid is fine. If it's not yasmin that is causing this, I don't know what else I could be doing wrong. Everyone around me agrees that I get plenty of exercise and that I have a healthy diet.

The only suspect I have is yasmin (my doctor thinks that might be it, too). The problem is that i've never heard of anyone gaining 40 lbs while on yasmin, or any other birth control. In fact, my doctor prescribed me with yasmin specifically because she believed that it would cause the least amount of weight gain.

Is there anyone out there who has also had a significant change in weight due to yasmin, or has heard of someone who has? I know that i'm very sensitive to most prescription drugs, and I usually experience most, if not all, of the side effects. Gaining 40 lbs from a lesser strength birth control doesn't seem very surprising to me, especially if someone else has had the same problem before.

I stopped taking yasmin yesterday, in case it's the reason for my weight gain. I hope I lose some weight.

I havn't been on yasmin, but I do know that different bcp's affect different people in different ways so while it may make you gain weight it may not make another person gain wieght. I would just try a different pill.

On the zoloft thing...I have been on that for a while and have def gained wieght from it...So the mixture of the two may have made it worse.

I hope this helps some...Try a different bcp, that may help. :d

I feel for ya girl! I was on ortho tri-cyclen, and although I didn't gain no 40 pounds, I all of a sudden started gaining weight (after staying the same weight for several years!). I only gained about 6 pounds, but it all happened in 1 month!!! I was freaking out! I thought it was stress, but my dr thought it was the pill, so I went off of it, & now am slowly losing...(thank god!!!).

However, every woman is different, and different birth control affects you different. You cannot compare yourself to other women! Several years ago I went on depo & within 18 months I had gained 30 pounds! It was horrible! I immediately went off of it after realizing it, and lost the weight in about 2 months!

I wish you luck in losing your's as well! You can do it! Just set your mind to it & choose a different form of birth control that your dr may recommend...

Keep us posted!

Yasmin And Weight Gain
Wow! Reading that email was weird, I am going through exactly the same thing, I am taking yasmin, I have been on it for about 6months, at the start I weighed 130 now I am at 150, I take spin classes three times a week, I am a vegetarian and a very active person, I have tried nearly all types of birth control pill and I must admit I did get weight gain with the other pills, but not this much! I am getting depressed about the whole situation, I am not taking any other medication and as far as my doctor is concerned I am very fit and healthy.

I really want to get off it but am trying to find an alternative, pregnancy is not an option!

I am just rambling on now, but I just wanted you to know that there is someone out there just like you suffering on this damn pill!

Hey, yeah I know exactly how you feel, it is horrible and depressing, I feel exactly the same, but after doing some research I have decided to get an iud, I have been on and off birth control since in was 14!! So I have been on everything from the mini pill to the injection, none of them suit me, maybe you should check into that too? I don't know where you are based and I know it is expensive but it might be worth saving up for so you don't feel so crappy, I feel your pain sista! Take care : )

Mini Pill Weight Gain
i was on the mini pill (micronor, nor qd) for about 2 months this year, and although i run 5 miles every day and eat ridiculously careful (fat free dairy, whole grain, lots of fruits and veggies, stay away from oils and grease), i still gained 15 lbs. every time i eat anything i feel it getting pumped into my upper arms and thighs, i feel bloated, and i never gained so much in such a short time. i usually lose weight easily when i try, normally i don't even have to try. i have been off of it for about a month and the weight is not coming off like i used to be able to. i know it is the pill because it is the only thing i am doing differently. anyone have similar stories with the mini pill or other progestin only pills?

My Birth Control(Pimple Care) Problem
I was on Jasmin, for about 8months, before i was on cyestra for about 4months. Both made me gain weight.
I was at a 125, which at my height is a perfect figure, and i went to a 145!
So i stopped taking it. It's been about 5days, and i've lost 5 pounds:D
Hopefully in abut 4weeks, i'll be done to my 125!
Because I'm a model

I took Yasmin last year before I was hospitalized with pulmonary embolism in both of my lungs, Yaz was a great birth control it helped me maintain my weight. I wouldn't recommend Yasmin to anyone!

Yasmin Birth control
I have been on Yasmin since 2004. I had no problems with my birth control until twoyears ago when I went on vacation and insurance would not fill my birth control because it was to soon for a refill but I needed to refill it because I was going to have to start a new month while on vacation. I could not afford to pay for yasmin without insurance so I just thought it would be okay to go one month without yasmin.well that one month I gained 15lbs. I went from 130lbs to 145lbs. I was so upset, I couldn't wait to get back on yasmin. After my month had past I starting taking Yasmin again. I work as a health coach and I run marathon and eat healthy. Since that eposide I have gained a total of 30lbs. I feel very uncomtfortable in my skin being at this weight (I'm 5'3). Friends and family cantbelieve I have not lost any weight since I am extremely active. Its been in the back of my mind that Yasmin has played a big part of my weight gain and an even bigger part in me not being able to lose any weight. I would like to get off yasmin but part of me is afraid I will gain even more weight just like I did that one month I did not take Yasmin. I am getting desperate and have a very hard time with my weight gain....any suggestions?
