Q: Husband Died After Gastric Bypass

My husband went in for gastric bypass on nov 8th 2005. He was released from the hospital and he was in severe pain. He was home for a total of 7 hrs then I took him back to the er room as per the surgeon. There the pain got worse it was in his lower belly and his back. His stomach began to get harder as time went on. They cold not do a ct scan on him becasue he was over the weight limit of 350lbs.

The surgeon had to do an emergency surgery and cut him open from chest to belly. When he came out he was in the critical care unit on a respirator. The surgeon came out from the operation and said he had no idea what happened and my husbands intestines were so enlarged they were tearing by his colon. As the days went on my husbands kidneys shut down and his liver levels were abnormal. They also said after 5 days that his pancreasus levels were abnormal.

After 2 1/2 weeks in ccu he died. They cannot tell me why he died. They say now it was pancretitus. He also developed sepsis after the second operation.

Has anyone experienced any of these problems after gastric. The sever pain in the lower belly or the pain in the back?

I Am Praying For Your Loss
I am so sorry for your loss. I can't really offer any help or insight, but I have had a chance to go to talk to people who have had that surgery done. I am a member of tops and we had some people come in and tell us their experiences. So far, I have heard nothing about the surgery itself being bad. They all have talked mainly about dietary restrictions. Again, I am sorry for your loss and will be keeping you in my prayers.

My Step Father Had the Same Op
He had it done about 15 years ago, they took 2/3's of his stomach, he been on a speical diet since, his pain were cramp in his stomah and could eat because of the pain. He has now what his doctor refers to as a sack.
He is still alive and well but drinks a lot, which was the cause of his problem from the start.
Iam very sorry for your loss and it sounds like you need some asnswers.
Which is very uderstandable. I hope you get them.
Kind regards

Jpal-- Gastric By Pass/ Death
I'm sorry for the loss you have suffered. It simply should not have been.
This surgery is really very serious, and anyone thinking of haveing it, should really read up and ask questions first.

My brother was left totally paralized in his arms , along with never being sewn up.

I'm sorry for your loss.. We had a good friend who went through it.. He later developed complications and almost died due to the lack of nutrition. He luckily pulled through it after they went in and did another operation (the did some sort of reversal to the procedure.. I understand sometimes you can do that and sometimes you can't). He still has some problems to this day (3 years later).

There are no words that can make you feel better and if infct malpractice is the cause of death, you will be awarded a large sum of money but that too will not make it better.

The scary thing about this surgery is the high moretality rate carried with it. My mother had the original banding surgery over 20 years ago and had to have it removed because she could not swallow even water. She still shas scarring so bad that she cannot eat very many things without them getting stuck and having to throw up for hours to try and get a kernal of corn unstuck.

She then had the gastric bypass and that failed within a couple of months because the staples have snapped. It cannot be repaired and it was done with medicade so there are no legal actions that can be done for my mom.

I hope your story will be read by the masses that are looking for the magic weight loss bullet because it is infact possibly a deadly bullet.

My prayers are with you and your family, dont stop letting others know what has happened to you.

Maybe Small Bowel Obstruction
I'm truly sorry for your loss. I'm a 33 year old male and have had hernia issues for about 7 years now. My bowels are of a high concern of mine so I've read up on strangulated hernias for a while now. I recently read an article on the risk of Small Bowel Obstruction due to hernia after these kinds of surgeries but I've been unsuccessful finding it again. I'll post it as soon as I find it. Best wishes
