Q: Second Trimester of Pregnancy Question
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 22nd, 2005
I am curretly 24 weeks pregnant with my second child. My first pregnancy went smoothly. At 15 weeks, they told me I had 1 protein in my urine which has remained unchanged. I have normal blood pressure and no swelling. The doctors are not concerned. Does this mean I am going to develop preeclampsia?

Second Trimester of Pregnancy Answer A14
PREECLAMPSIA USUALLY CAN NOT BE PREVENTED, BUT IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT IT IS DETECTED EARLY SO THAT YOU CAN TAKE ACTION! The reason for this disease remains unknown. You are probably exhibiting only one of the three recognized symptoms. The three symptoms for preeclampsia are: additional protein in the urine, high blood pressure and swelling. Your case sounds relatively non-threatening, given the current symptoms. It is important to note that “protein in the urine” may also be caused by a urinary infection or kidney disorder. These two diagnoses usually must be excluded before you consider a diagnoses for preeclampsia. Nontheless, you should consider continuing with a program of regular medical checks for blood pressure and urinary proteins with your primary care physician.
