Hi,

my dad is diabetic and now has relativily failed kidneys. His doctors are about to start him on dialysis on a regular basis. He has never had this done before.

One of the doctors is suggesting that they can transplant a third kidney (without removing any of the existing one) and perform dialysis only a couple of time and the third kidney should take over. My question is; is this really possible? Can one person have safly three kidneys? What about the risk having three kidneys.

Also, what is the risk in performing a transplant like this when he is diabetic and also heart patiend because of his diabetes?

Thank you for any information.

Hi, i'm sure you have your answer by now but I really don't think the third kidney will be a problem. I believe when you have a kidney tranplant you can basically attach it to any main blood vessel and it will do it's job. It should be a great thing for you father. Good luck to you and your dad.

Kidney Transplant For Your Dad
Hi- a successful kidney transplant would be great for your father. A transplant would make him feel much healthier. The doctors don't remove the old kidneys -- there's no need. My husband has had three kidney transplants over the last 22 years. The most recent was last year. A transplant gives the patient a much improved quality of life.

I'm pretty sure that the existing kidneys won't be of any harm since the Doctors suggested it. That's really good news for your dad and at least you'd get rid of the dialysis billing
