Want to Understand My Bipolar Boyfriend

I have been with my boyfirend for 3 years and within the last 5 months he has totally changes, very distant. We ended up breaking up 2 months ago when he found out he was bipolar. He told me that I am his best friend and that he still loves me but he cannot have anyone depend on him right now. I understand this part but what I don't understand is his actions. He is in therapy and taking welbutrin but he goes out drinking with his firends alot and sometimes does not come home.
I confronted him and told him I was worried about his behavior. He told me this is the way its going to be for awhile( its what he wants to do right now and he does not want any comitments). What is a while, a few months, years? I want to understand his thinking. Am I stupid for wanting to wait for him and support him like this? He calls me every day and invites me to family events and things that are important to him so I know he cares for me.He is worth the wait but am I fooling myself? Please help me understand this, from someone with bipolars point of view. I want to do whats best for him and me !
