Progesterone Levels For Males Posted: 12-15-05 18:23pm
The background info: i'm a 30 year old
male who has had sexual problems my whole
life in addition to physical features that
are somewhat feminine such as
gynecomastia, pear shaped appearence, and
the hair on my upper body that can be
described as spotty and "fuzzy" as opposed
to coarse. I've spent the past year
going to various doctors to learn what
this is all about. Most of them blame it
on alcohol consumption and marijuana use.
But these problems started several years
before I ever used either so I have a hard
time accepting their explanation so far.
My question:
i need a little help understanding a
recent blood test. Specifically a test
labled as
17-hydroxyprogesterone, lc/ms/ms
17-ohprogesterone, lc/ms/ms: my result
is 313 ng/dl and the "normal" reference
range is 32-307ng/dl
my endocrinologist doesn't seem to
concerned with this and they forgot to
submit the sample to retest this level.
From what I can find online that normal
range seems to be for a female, but maybe
i'm misreading the info i'm finding. In
fact almost all the progesterone
information I can find refers to women and
pregnancy or ovary issues. If my result
is abnormal what effects would that level
have on my body? Could it be related to
the problems i've had for so long?
Any information you can give me is greatly
appreciated as these problems and my
avoidance of dealing with them has had a
devastating effect on my mental health and
my life in general over the years.
If this question belongs in a different
forum please tell me which one.
I greatly appreciate the reply but there's
nothing about progesterone on that page.
It is helping me understand some of the
other results that I was confused about
though so thanks for at least providing a
good general link.
Anybody else have anything?

Sorry man, I wasn't to sure, and that was
the best link I could find....
Thanks cd and zen ( http://www.Drwong
.Us/archivedcareofapenis.Html ) those
are both good links. Although the more
I read online the more confused i'm
getting. Learning this is clearly a
very "in the works" area of medicine
why the hell does this forum destroy every
link that is posted??? Not very helpful
at all

who knows.... If your still confused, you
could just call the place that did the
blood work and ask them, they might be
able to help.

Well, I put your test in my search engine
17-hydroxyprogesterone, lc/ms/ms
and I come up with---you will not be
having a pre-term baby. Lol
I will keep searchin and see what I can
find--okay?

This test is used primarily to identify
patients with congenital adrenal
hyperplasia (cah). Cah is a rare
genetic disorder that results from a
deficiency of a particular enzyme that
normally makes cortisol in the adrenal
gland. This deficiency results in
abnormal levels of certain steroids and
hormones, specifically increasing
androgens (male hormones) and decreasing
glucocorticoids.
It is a hormone deficiency you would be
speaking of when you describe your
symptoms. So this is a test that is
checking your adrenal gland which is the
primary source of hormone activity in the
brain. Governing the rest of your
body(in hormone production) from there
down. If you know what I mean. I
dont know if I exactly said it right, but
the adrenal gland governs all the hormones
in our body. It starts at the adrenal
gland, to the thyroid, to the female and
male sexual organs, to the
stomach(cortisol).Etc...Etc...
Cortisol---makes you eat or not eat--and
store or not store fat around your belly.
It is also called the stress
hormones--which explains it causing us to
eat--or not eat. When pple are stressed
they eat too much or do not eat at all.

In males, progesterone is a necessary
intermediate for the production of
corticosteroids and androgens.
