Is irritability a symptom of depression? I don't just mean a little irritated, I mean really irritated over the stupidest little things, I work in a shop and most of the time feel like telling the customers to shut up (of course I never do), I am like it with my family aswell, its like the littlest thing gets on my nerves most days, its been going on for quite a few months really!

I do suffer from anxiety, could that be the cause??

I would think so. I have the same thing. I am irritable most of the day with everyone because my meds are not currently working. It is terrible as I treat everyone pretty crappy. I think anxiety and irritablity go hand in hand.

Hi,

i get irritable with people mostly when i'm depressed. Do you have any other symptoms of depression at all? Are you on any medication at all that may be affecting your mood?

Hi,

it sounds like you are suffering from stress - try and think of ways that you might be able to reduce your stress, things such as a 10min walk per day might help you feel better. It's important that you reduce stress if you have control over it, because if you don't your feelings may build up and you could become depressed.

Take good care of yourself.

I agree with previous posts that depression and stress make irritability worse, but there must be something else that triggers such a reaction to everyday things that most people don’t even notice. Something I have not been able to find an answer to. I have been irritable since I was about 3 or 4; it tapered down in my teens but its back in my 30’s with a vengeance. I can’t be around people because just about everything gets on my nerves. I exercise and take herbs to help with the stress and irritability, but it has no effect at all. It is affecting my personal life and work. Has anyone with similar symptoms been diagnosed with anything or knows of anything that can be done to relieve the misery that is living with extreme irritability.
