Q: An Abortion Can Cause Five Years of Mental Anguish, Anxiety,

An abortion can cause five years of mental anguish, anxiety, guilt and even shame, a bmc medicine study suggests.

University of oslo researchers compared 40 women who had had a miscarriage with 80 who chose to have an abortion.

Miscarriage was associated with more mental distress in the six months after the loss of a baby - but abortion had a much longer lasting negative effect.

Pro-choice campaigners said there was no evidence abortion directly caused psychological trauma.

The researchers said their work underlined the importance of giving women information about the psychological effects of losing a baby - either through miscarriage or abortion.

The oslo team found that, after 10 days, 47.5% of women who had miscarried suffered from some degree of mental distress compared with 30% of the abortion group.

The proportion of women who had a miscarriage suffering distress decreased during the study period, to 22.5% at six months and to just 2.6% at two years and five years.

But among the abortion group 25.7% were still experiencing distress after six months, and 20% at five years.

The researchers also said that women who had an abortion had to make an effort to avoid thinking about the event.

Complex response

the researchers, led by anne nordal broen, said the responses of the women in the miscarriage group were similar to those expected after a traumatic life event.

However, the abortion group had more complex responses.

Richard warren, from the royal college of obstetricians and gynaecologists, said: "it has always been considered, and this study also shows, that the decision to terminate may bring with it long-standing feelings of anxiety and guilt.

"while most women are able to manage and cope with these feelings, when necessary, the need for ongoing support and counselling should be recognised and appropriate help given."

anna pringle, from the anti-abortion charity life, said: "this confirms years of experience with women who come to us for counselling after abortion.

"the emotional suffering can be massive."

thoughtful decision

however, a spokeswoman for the british pregnancy advisory service - the uk's leading provider of abortion services - said most women weighed up the consequences fully before opting for an abortion.

"we don't see that many women for post-abortion counselling.

"we offer that service but women very rarely come back because they are able to cope with it by themselves."

a spokeswoman for the family planning association, said: "there is no evidence to suggest that abortion directly causes psychological trauma.

"women can experience mixed feelings after an abortion such as relief or sadness.

"these are natural reactions and few women experience long-term problems."

I agree that the hurt and pain may never go away.... But what I dont understand is when a person says that they are pro life.. Wouldnt pro life mean that they dont believe in abortion at all??? So that means even if a person is raped they still are not suppose to believe in abortion.. The are no exceptions with pro life.. This is just my opinion

20% of those who had abortions were upset five years later. That is 16 out of 80. That means 80% were good.

The other 20% were probably pressured into terminating by their partner or family, or had to terminate a wanted pregnancy for medical reasons.

ready made excuses again

i just hate biased reporting. The study really suggested that 80% of women who have abortions feel absolutely fine five years later. I did not dispute that 20% don't. Leading on the minority is just bad reporting.

Omg, here we go again. Yes their are some that do regret having an abortion and some feel that they were pushed into having one, we have all(or should I say most of us have) done things we have regretted but it was right at the time and how many of these women blame it on the abortion when it could have been something they did in the past, prior to the abortion that they regretted and blame it on the abortion, their are probably that percentage that have regretted having the children. If help is their after the abortion and they do not accept it, their is nothing no one can do about it, as I have said many times before and that is that you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make them drink, their are some people that enjoy just being miserable and it is sad!

this "survery" is bunk, because they interviewed more abortion women than misscarriage women, in fact, twice as many, so of course the data is going to be skewed. Plus, good surveys have hundreds of participants, not 40 and 80.

"while most women are able to manage and cope with these feelings, when necessary, the need for ongoing support and counselling should be recognised and appropriate help given."

"we offer that service but women very rarely come back because they are able to cope with it by themselves."

if a woman needs help coping with her desicion, then she needs to go get it.

Any trauma at all can cause 5 years of mental anguish, it's all in your perspctive on it.

so a woman can not have an abortion related problem? It just has to be something else that happend to her?

Pro-life "she feels bad about her abortion"

pro-choice "she feels bad that she didn't get a bike when she was ten and having an abortion just brought back those hurt feelings"

why can it not get through your thick skulls that some women do feel bad after an abortion .B.E.C.A.U.S.E. Of an abortion...Not because of anything else that happend before the abortion.

that's really stupid. If I got an abortion, the bike I didn't get when I was 10 would not be the thing causing my bad feelings, if I had any at all. It would be the actual abortion. That's psychodynamic bullcrap, saying that it's past unconscious events.

I'm pro-choice, and I believe most women't don't feel as bad as you all are trying to say there are, but I don't believe that the sad feelings that (apparently, according to this skewed and badly done report) some wome feel are caused by past paltry events like not getting a bike.

i don't believe the survey because it was done badly. Show me one that had thousands of participants, and a similar amount of women on both sides, both those who felt long-term trauma and those who didn't. Then I will be willing to consider it. But corrolative data and polls are still highly innacurate.

Plus yeah, it is sayng that 80% of the women didn't feel long-term trauma. Should we just ignore all of those women? They don't count cause they were happy with their desicion?

i understand. Then I don't know what I am, but I do not consider myself pro-choice.

I can sympathize with woman seeking abortion for rape. With that being said....I personally would not seek one if, .God forbid, I was raped. In my opinion, it is not the babies fault and therefore does not deserve a death sentence. I would be determined to raise that child with no less love than a child conceived out of "normal" circumstances. This is why I believe I am pro-life. I can understand very few circumstances, but I myself would nor will ever abort.

80% were just fine. So, it looks to me like abortion isn't that traumatizing in the long term, since most women are fine afterwards.

it is what the poll says, does it not? Are you going to debate what it says? I clearly states that 20% felt long-term trauma, so that means the remaining 80% did not.

80% is a large percentage... Of happy women who aborted!

now who is ignoring what is right under her nose?

rah rah rah. That's really all I have to say because ultimately, who cares about polls. Woman can feel bad or happy all they want, it does not change what abortion is....Killing and it does not change that it is sick and wrong, and woman who do so simply suck. Easy put!

no, abortion is terminating an unwanted pregnancy. That is all it is.

Look around you. About a third of the women you see "suck."

oh then you agree with me that polls are stupid. Fine, then let's stop arguing the issue of this poll, whoever first posted it.

Abortion is not sick and it is not wrong. You believe it is so, but your ideals do not make it true. I should rephrase... It is sick and it sucks, but only for you. It is subjective.

Still, I find it amusing how you suddenly stopped being a proponent of the poll te instant we showed you what it was fully saying. 20% felt bad, and 80% felt good. But if we just say 20% felt bad, and we don't mention the others, then it sounds much worse. And that's what they did with the presentation of this data.

1/20 chances of winning this lottery! Sounds like pretty good odds, yes? For a million dollars.

19/20 chances of losing this lottery! Eh, I don't think that sounds too good, do you? It's the same exact lottery though.

It's all in presentation, and showing the full data.

yes, abortion is terminating and unwanted pregnancy. It is also terminating an innocent child (that is what pregnancy is.....The development of a human, it is how you got here, just in case your mommy never told you that).

Whatever the statistics may be for woman who have abortions....So be it. If your correct than yes, a third of the woman around me suck in the worst way. And you can group them all up and I would be willing to let them know...Happily and willingly. ;o)
