Hi

i am 22, never had any health problems and no history of convulsions or epilepsy in my family, and had a first seizure 4 weeks ago, in the supermarket after work. I had just started a new job after 4 weeks of unemployment and had spent a lot of the 4 months drinking, although not too excessively, and had been quite stressed out. I was in the supermarket and my vision started to jump about, so I went to leave, got to the checkouts and my vision jumped about a bit again. Then the next thing I remember I came round on the floor, someone said they came round the corner and I was fitting, for about a minute. My muscles ached, but I didn't bite my tongue or soil myself. I was taken to hospital and after about half an hour my blood pressure taken and blood sugar and heart rate tested, all were normal but they did find a urine infection. I haven't had another seizure yet, it's been 4 weeks, but I have had muscle twitches, however I have been really anxious so I thought maybe it could be that. I guess basically i'm wondering in general how long after a first seizure it is most common to have another one, if you're going to have one, and also how common a single seizure is and if the factors i've mentioned could have caused a solitary one. Thanks everyone

It is common to have one seizure at some time in anyone's life. Anyone at anytime can have one seizure but this does not mean it will happen again.

Did they do an eeg on you?

I hope it is a one time event for you. Things such as drinking and the infection can lower the threshold allowing that seizure. Add in the stress of a new job and maybe lack of sleep and it probably added to it all.

Hoping you are doing fine now. It is important for your regular doctor to know about it. If you have another you should probably see a neurologist.

Ok I got my results from the neurologist today. While most of my eeg was normal, he said there were some epileptic bursts when they did the fastest setting on the strobe light. Does this mean I am definitely epileptic? I didn't wet myself or bite my tongue during the seizure but I guess that doesn't really mean anything.

Strobe Test, Not So Good?
I always had abnormal eeg's and sometimes had petit-mal seizures during the strobe test.

What tickles me pink is this:
between '99 and '01 I was a hardcore clubber. Friday and saturday nights were spent dancing for hours, right underneath the strobe lights.

And I never had a single seizure while clubbing, or afterwards.

I asume it's beacuse I was having fun and in a relaxed mood.
During my eeg's is was always stressed out.

???

Time Between Fits
Hi pippage, it can be scary after that first fit. I am newly diagnosed after 2 fits. My second fit occured 6 months after the first and was funnily enough in a supermarket! I was taken to hospital both times where all tests came back normal including a brain scan. My specialist says that in a lot of cases there is no visible cause but did say that by the sounds of it I was very stressed leading up to them and this may have been a trigger. I hope you don't have another and wish you best of health and good luck in the new job!
