Q: Had Discogram! Piece of Cake!!

I went to my dreaded disco yesterday; no pain no problems!
It helped that I had my same ns and nurse anesthetist doing the prcedure, so they knew I had no ability to lay flat on stomach. I had 3 pillows and could bend my leg to help prop up.

The discogram (for me) was nothing of all the horror stories! At least for me it wasn't. I have a very high pain tolerance and do not take meds unless in dire need. And yes, my pain sends me to the floor and I have to resort to crawling all too often!

Anyway, for those considering a disco, go for it! It is no big deal. I want to give some encouragement to those facing one. And I am the worst for going to the doc for a problem!!! I read all the horror stories and worked myself up into a frenzy. But it pales in comparison to my daily pain that has taken me out of the cockpit....And that sucks!!!

in my disco, my pain was finally duplicated, and don't expect to be sedated (you dont want to!!!!) (i wasn't ) so you can relay as accurate info to your doc as you can. I've had so many treatments (diagnostic) and no help, so disco was next. I am so glad I took it.
The wait was the worse thing b/c nurse try to keep you sitting or in bed...Both I cannot do!
So, suck it up for a few minutes and just keep the thoughts positive! Your daily pain is what you want to stop, so this could be the answer! :d

i have no pain a day later, no meds either. I have one strange symptom and that is my left leg has lost all strength. I have feeling, can move, but it won't hold any weight.
I hope this is only from the procedure and will go away!

Any thoughts welcome! :d

Glad to hear your doing better! I am not familiar with the procedure you had called disco. What is this? I'd like to know because I to can't lay on my stomach for any length of time. I will be looking up info on disco and share it with you later. Steevo

I am happy that you got the test done but I am confused as to how the doc did the test. The purpose of the test is to recreate the pain you are feeling at a much more intense level. If the pain is not duplicated, the test is negative and this proves the disc is not the cause of pain.

However it happened, it is good that you have answers.

For those that see this thread, I have had 2 discograms and in my opinion, I thought my spine was going to explode it hurt so bad. This was how it was shown that I had discogenic pain and I needed to have a lamiectomy with full disc replacement. I could had fusion but instead we did the charite 3 artificial disc.

I am now experiencing facetogenic pain and so I will be having facet blocks and if they help I will have nerve oblation done at l5/s1 and l4/l5 because these are the nerves that show problems.

Hope this helps,
brian

Hi steevo and brian!

The discogram is where there is suspect damage within the disc, so needles are pushed into the disk where a dye is injected. Then you are sent for a catscan for cross section pics of the discs, and the dye will fill in any cracks/fissures. But your pain must be duplicated!

You are not sedated because the doc needs to find which disc is causing the pain, if it is.

In my case prior, I had the epidural cortisone shots for bulging discs (that the mri revealed) but those did me no good.

My symptoms (cannot stand up straight nor arch back (ooof! )) then pointed to facet problem. So my ns (pain specialist) changed my last shot to a series for facet pain. The xrays and dye traces did indeed revel some nasty facets, but the dang shots did no good. So facets are not cause of my pain.

So, the next step was to get a look at the center of the disc; and here is where a discogram is done.

(steevo, do you have the link for "spine and beyond" forum? I think you came over there recently...I'm not on my laptop and can't find the link  ) anyway, there is where you should go for some wonderful info on everything back/spine related!

And yes, my pain was duplicated, and yes it hurt like the fires of hades! But i've tolerated this problem for 2 yrs (sciatica 15 yrs) and just toughed it out until I could no longer make it thru a flight day. So this was no big deal, just the same as what I put up with on a daily basis, and even when the pain was so bad I have to resort to slithering across the floor to get around! And I don't take pain meds unless I am contemplating a bullet for the pain (once a week maybe). I am blessed with high pain tolerance.

My ns shot 4 discs total, and 3 did not cause any pain, just pressure. But when he hit "the one"...It was obvious, wooohoooo yeowch%#@$!. I let him go as long as I could stand it.

Also, if you cannot lie on your stomach (which I cannot either), talk to your team, let them know what you can and cannot (will not) do. My team knew me from all of the previous shots. You can stack pillows under your belly/hips, and not use one for your head. I also had one under my feet. I was also allowed to hike a leg up a bit to help keep pressure off my "kink" in my back.
If you have a team who tries to make you do otherwise, be nice (they have sharp needles!) and just ask to talk to your doctor. You should have no problem!

I had a different team on my second shot, and they tried to tell me I can't do this and that, but we remedied this quickly when I climbed onto the table and positioned myself and declared 'come hell or high water, I ain't moving!'...It worked fine :d

i am now...Into my end of 4th day after discogram....It was easier than any of my epidurals! I have some electricity down my left leg, but that is from the dye pressure in the discs. My pain is still as it was, since this is only a diagnostic, not a treatment.

My disco did not duplicate the sciatica though. That may need to be addressed by a myelogram.

I hope this helps clarify things!

Best of luck, hang in there, and wear out every diagnostic option before any surgery!

Hugs,

Since a slip and fall accident in 2003 I began suffering from cervical and lumbar pain due to 8 herniated discs. They began as bulging and now are herniated. I have developed degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis, and other problems. I have taken so many medications, prior to this I took very good care of my health wouldn't even take a tylenol! Won my lawsuit in 2006, out of $200,000 I was awarded $36,000! I saw none of it and never had the surgeries that were recommended! I do not want surgery but I have had everything therapy, cortisone injections. Funny how as soon as I got on State of TX Medicaid those neuros say there is not anything wrong, even tho 9 MRI's later they clearly show the disc problems. About a yr ago, I started with bladder problems. I urinate once every hr, can't even sleep. All the steroid shots did was to cause me to gain a lot of weight! After 5 yrs the county hospital finally took me as a patient and the neuro there wants to do a discogram or mylogram. I have spoken to people who have had that done and they swear never to go through that procedure again! I only take 1/2 a pain pill in the morning and 1/2 late afternoon. I do not want to become addicted. My stomach is destroyed and I have to take Nexium for that. What i really, really want is the TRUTH why do they have to do a mylo or disco? Doesn't an MRI give them the info they need to decide on back surgery or not? I have 3 herniated discs in neck, 5 lower back. Please someone respond...

My 6th epidural didn't give me even 3 day's relief, so discogram is next, and then surgery is likely. I am very small, so they tell me that my surgery should be very easy and non-invasive. I am allergic to narcotics, and became addicted to muscle relaxants over the years over the back spasms... not sure how this will go down. I have three herniated discs in total. Say a prayer, and thanks! Amy

hi amy
the good thing about discogram is that drs and you will pinpoint exactly where your pain comes from. then the proper treatment can be established. it may hurt but it will be worth it...good luck...pete
