I know this is for people, but I need comments from you for help in dealing with canine epilepsy. My 4.5 pound; 2 year old female chihuahua has epilepsy. She started in oct. Of 2003. It is called idiopathic epilepsy. They are grand mals. The vet put her on pheno. We are slowly increasing her dosage. She is averaging at least 1 - 2 seizures a week. The questions are - do you have any suggestions for control? Does she feel any bad effects while seizuring or afterwards? Are we being cruel in not putting her down? Thanks for any help or comments.

We have a retriever mix (70 lbs) that was having grand mal seizures that started at about 3 years of age. He had about a dozen seizures between 3 and 4 years that were about 8 weeks apart at first but got more frequent and severe until they were about every 2 weeks.

We decided to try the Keppra generic which we purchased from a licensed canadian pharmacy. He has been on the Keppra for almost 3 years now and has not had a seizure since 3 days after starting the medicine. He doesn't appear to have had any bad side effects and is in good health. He takes (2) 500mg pills/day (1 ea morning and night). The cost is averaging 70 cents/pill.
