Q: Meds And Sexual Dysfunction

Hi,

i am a 33 yr old male with a history of depression. Over the years I have taken pretty much every anti-depressent med at one time or another. The reason I kept switching is because they all triggered the well-known sexual dysfuntcion side-effect. I had particular success with lexapro, paxil, and luvox, but they destroyed my sex life. I also ended up trying others like wellbutrin, and they just didn't work (and sexual dysfunction).

My doctor and I tried a number of options and combinations, but against all the general recommendations such as building tolerance, trying combinations, etc, nothing ever worked.

I recently read an article in newsweek, I jumped because the title promised a new idea or solution to this problem, but it ended up describing the same common suggestions I have heard a million times.

With every ssri I had a decreased libido and inability to climax. With all the other classes of meds, they just didn't work. I have also been in therapy on and off for years.

So, I go untreated.

Question: is there any hope for me? Is there any new medication development that maybe hasn't been popularized yet? Anything radical out there?

Thx

I had the same issue while taking paxil. My solution, there is some really cool stuff out there called stamina rx. You may see some at the cash register at your local gas station. That stuff worked for me like crazy! No prescription, it is natural. I almost signed up to be a porn star. Ok, maybe not. If that doesnt work, try the ad medications, they really work. Nothing wrong with taking that, I know many people without problems taking it anyway. I say its better to be happy and have to take a pill for sex than depressed.

I was on celexa, and it was perfect for me, it is known to cause the sexual dysfunctions also--i did not notice any while taking it.

Seratonin uptake inhibitor---i dont know what ssri is

Well i'll look for "stamina rx". But that's not some kind of totally unregulated horse amphetamine or something is it? A steroid? I don't want any dirty stuff that's going to kill me.

As for celexa, I tried that too. I can't remember if it helped or not but it also had the sexual dysfunction because I wasn't on it for long.

Ssri - selective seritonin re-uptake inhibitor.

I, very much to my confusion and disadvantage, must be one of that small minority that simply suffers this side-effect universally, on any ssri. I mean what are the odds of that? My doctor and I went for two years trying different meds, waiting for some to build up tolerance. Every time, I couldn't climax. I never got used to any, it was hopeless.

It's such a shame because the meds that worked, really worked.

Anyway, whatever...

No, it is not some horse pill or steroid. Look it up and read about it online. You are not the only one that suffers from this, I would think that all the ssris do the same thing sexually. If they work though, I still would rather take some stamina rx or viagra and still be happy. Talk to your doctor about the stamina rx. I had the same problem as you at first, then I went through periods where mr. Happy wouldnt do anything. That is when I would take the pill. I didnt have to have it to climax though.

I want to reiterate that I am not sure what stamina rx or viagra will do for climax issues. All I know is they work when it comes to everything else. Good luck! And talk to your doctor first.

First of all, thanks for all the comments.

I did try viagra as well (like I said, I tried everything), and that did not work. I mean it worked in the sense that I had a relentless erection, but it did not work in the sense that I still couldn't climax.

As for herbal remedies, I just don't buy that at all. I was on st. John's wort for several months and absolutely nothing happened. If there's something else out there that has a definitive history of treating depression without destroying your sex life, by all means let me know.

In fact, to clear the air, unless it is proven to work, i'm not into alternative remedies, acupuncture, any overpriced herbal remedies that are, in my opinion, a waste of time. And yoga doesn't alleviate depression either. Sorry to be firm but I just want to be honest and clear. They may have worked for some, but I am not convinced. It. Believe me after two years of experimentation, I went through all stages of frustration, relaxation, mind tricks, psychology, etc.

Thanks again for the comments.
