Pregnant After Being On the Pill 8 Years Posted: 12-06-05 18:52pm
I have a medical question with a bit of
non-medical drama to go along with it.
Is there a way to find out if someone was
in fact using the pill when they got
pregnant?
My wife has been on the pill 8 years
(since the birth of her first child). She
had some pains in her abdomen last week
and went to the doctor, and was told that
she is four weeks pregnant. What are the
odds? My wife says that kaiser permanente
told her that it was a 3% chance. I'm not
sure I believe that. Something doesn't
seem right about this.
I love my wife, but I didn't want another
baby. She wanted another baby more than
anything in the world. I really want to
trust that this was truly unplanned.
However, everyone that knows us has
secretly asked me "are you sure she didn't
quit taking the pill without your
knowledge?"
here's what I know.
* we've been sexually active for four
years
* five months ago she told me that she was
ready to have a baby with me, but I told
her that I did not want that.
* two months ago we had a "scare" - she
was three weeks late, and she's never been
more than a few days late before. Before
the doctor confirmed that she wasn't
pregnant, I told her that even though I
didn't want a baby, that I would accept
responsibility if she was in fact
pregnant, and that I wouldn't leave her as
she feared I would.
* she tells me that last pill she took was
the day before she went in for the blood
test.
So the circumstances, along with the
skepticism of close mutual friends, have
left an unfortunate burning question in my
mind - has she been honest with me? Was
she in fact still taking the pill when she
got pregnant? I'd really like to get rid
of this question. I hope I don't get
flamed here for having this question.
Please tell me if there is something that
I can look for on her blood test results
that will show me that she was still
taking the pill when she got pregnant.

I do know that the pill can affect certain
lab results but I seriously doubt you can
look at them and see if she was really
taking her pill. Even if she wasn't
taking them (even though it is wrong to
deceive you) does it matter in the long
run? You can't change the fact that she's
pregnant now. She obviously wants the
baby and maybe you should just accept it.
I'm sure you love your wife very much and
I hope everything works out between the
two of you. Btw... My mom got pregnant
w/ my brother while she was on the pill
and i've heard a lot of other stories of
women getting pregnant on birth control.

Getting pregnant on bc does happen. In
your situation, i'm not sure what to tell
ya. Maybe she was taking them correctly
& as fate would have it, you two are
supposed to be parents again. Everything
happens for a reason:) being pregnant can
be a very scarey thing, all by itself,
whether you're married to someone or not.
So try to accept what has happened, &
let your wife know that you are there for
her. That is really important.
Compromising with her, by having this baby
& enjoying it, will make her so happy
- i"m sure. If having any more children
is definately out of the question, then I
would discuss the issue of having a
vasectomy. And the fact that everyone is
asking if she quit taking the pills
without your knowledge - that's very
unsupportive, & it probably makes her
feel like crap to hear that ( or if she
doesn't know - it would make her feel like
crap if she knew friends/family/etc made
such accusations) please try to be
supportive & tell her everything will
be alright:) keep us posted:) best of
luck.

You can definitely get pregnant while on
the pill. In most instances it's because
you are on antibiotics. Dr.'s don't
always ask all the questions they are
supposed to, and maybe her Dr. Gave her
antibiotics which really messes with the
effectiveness of the pill
