Q: Oddly Located Head Pain Behind the Ears- Tmj Related?

I am a 23 year old mother of two suffering from symptoms of tmj. I don't know exactly what caused it. All I know is that the symptoms began about two months after I was in an auto accident in april 2004 and have worsened since then. My main symptoms are mainly located on the right side of my head although I do experiance muscle tension on my left side. My symptoms include: pain in my jaw, pulsatile tinnitus, sore neck and upper back pain, a tingling sensation on my right shoulder blade from time to time, and clicking and popping sounds just below my ear on the right side of my head. I also experiance tension headaches that sometimes last for more than two days and vary in intensity based on what i'm doing. The scary part however is that I now experiance a feeling of pressure in my head about a half an inch to an inch directly behind my ear going towards the back of my head and the pressure appears to be about as big as a half dollar. This frightens me because in all of my research on tmj, this particular symptom has yet to be mentioned. I had an mri and an ultrasound of my cervical neck veins done about six months ago and they came back normal but the pressure started about three months ago. So my question is whether or not anyone else with tmj has experianced this type of pressure/pain as well. If so, please reply. It would ease my worries a great deal.

I don't have pressure exactly like that, but I do have random spurts of pulsing and pressure located behind my left ear and around my left temple. From talking with my family doctor, an ear, nose, and throat specialist, phsyical therapist, and dentist, tmj can do many strange things. However, I have not been in an auto accident as severe as what you have mentioned. If it would make you feel better to go to your Dr., then I would. Still, I have been told that mris are good for years. Hope this helps.

I Know What You Are Talking About
I have had tmj for over 10 years. My right side is alot worse than my left. I barely feel pain in my left side. But right above my right ear, about half inch up, there is pain there. And right in front of it, my side of my ear is tender. This all happens on my right side, because thats where all the pain is on my right side. The pain above my ear comes and goes. I used to worry about ohmigoodness, I think I have a brain tumor. Escesially with my eye problems, right eye pains. Just my whole right sideseems to hurt. But ive always been afraid to go to the doctor, or tell anyone about it. But ive learned to live with it. I don't have time to be in pain, I three little ones I need to take care of. And from this website, these people told me the symptoms they were having, and thats what I got. I always thought I was the only one who experienced all these things. I had no clue that vertigo was a symptom of tmj. This website has helped me so much. Ive always had bad anexiety. About dying and all that stuff. These people helped me so much they don't even know.

Pain Behind Ears And Back of Head
I have the same symptoms as csmith223!!! I'm a 40 year old female and I get sharp pains behind my ears and then right in the middle of the back of my head. It feels like someone is trying to push a needle in the back of my head and it's always in the same spot. Never had this before. It just started about 2 weeks ago. Does any one have any suggestions? It hurts and aches whenever I try to massage that spot on the back of my head.

I Know!!! Hi Hi
I know i know. I have had this.!!! A strange feeling about a half and inch behind the ear. I had this when i first became ill. And your right not many people have this. In my case it WAS a very bad neck and a dislocated jaw. if you were in a car accident. whiplash or neck trauma and tmj are very closely related. it could be one of two things. Neck muscles attach to the bone right behind the ear.or maybe a dislocated jaw. at the time of the accident you might not have felt it right then. lots of times if a neck is involved, they medical doctors look ONLY for things like herniated discs, buldges, arhtritis, things like that. The dont usually look at neck alignment!!! take it from me, who is living it, it can be neck alignment. hope that has helped, cause i remember that odd feeling you mentioned.if you have any questions dont be shy,i am not a doc but i have experienced all of this, and know alot about necks and tmj( not a thing about surgeries tho) love cindy

tmj and pain behind the ear
I too have tmj and didn't connect it to the pain behind my left ear until I saw the dentist this morning. The only way to describe this horrible pain is that it feels like labor pains. It comes very intensely , then leaves quickly . It's gone for less than a minute then comes back.

i have suffered from tmj for ten years now or more> it got so bad i could hardly open my mouth, i don't chew gum anymore. plate guard just won't stay in. but now i have severe migraines, they won't go away and my ears ache really bad. My eyes, I think I need to wear shades inside. any loud noise hurts. I've tried heat, ambien, to sleep through the pain. I am ready to give up and go to the er. will they be any help? ER
ER will likely not do much, they might or might not give you medication that might help only temporary. Best solution would be to see oral surgeon, that's whom you would be referred to if you go to ER. They might just tell you to see your family doctor, or just send you home with some diagnosis out of a sky such as "migraine attack" and you would not definitely not be happy about that. ER is definitely not for diagnostic purposes, they might run some step, might give some medications - but then what.

Hair resting behind my ear....?
Hi,
Okay I have tmj. I am deaf in my left ear and I have been ever since I can remember. I was told that my hearing loss was due to some sort of nerve damage. I grind my teeth at night and I recently I some dental work done. Root canal type work. Here is my question, lately I have been experiencing slight pain or discomfort whenever I try and push my hair behind my ear(s). It doesn't hurt at first, but after a while the weight of my hair resting on the area behind my ear actually begins to hurt... has anyone else experienced this?
