Birth Control & Family Blood Clotting History - At Risk? Posted: 12-03-05 19:43pm
Hello all
i am very new to this forum (this is my
first post) on behalf of my girlfriend.
She and I are constantly dreaming about
using bc instead of condoms as a
contraceptive.
However, she is extremely terrified of bc
because her family has a history of blood
clotting. Her mother is unable to take bc
because of blood clotting risk.
Furthermore, her sister used bc pills
several years ago and suffered life
threatening blood clotting in her thighs
and was rushed to hospitol.
However, we are both very keen on using bc
and we are wondering what you all
recommend? Is it most likely she may be
hurt as well?
Please also note the following:
a) she is 21
b) she is a non smoker and very very
rarely drinks socially.
C) she has used emergency contraception
("morning-after pill") because of
accidents we have had twice before. It is
my understanding that emergency
contraceptive pills are the same as bc
pills but more potent??
D) after using emergency contraception
pills she had a brown discharge for
several days after taking it.
E) her sister who suffered blood clotting
from bc years ago has since used emergency
contraception as well and has not had any
problems with it (no blood clots)
thank you all for your input and advice.
We both desperately want to use bc to
avoid the hastle of condoms but nothing is
more important to me then her safety and
well-being. I simply couldnt be without
her.
Your advice is much appreciated

If she has a history of blood clots in the
family, then I would definitely think no
as far as hormonal bc, unless she talks to
her Dr. About which method has less. I
know yasmin is supposed to be a bc pill
with the least amount of hormones (among
the pills). Women have died here in the
states from blood clots while on the
patch, so I would say "no" to that.
Nuvaring is the one that i've seen with
the least about of hormones. It's a
vaginal ring kept in place for 3 weeks,
then removed for 1 week, then you start a
new ring, etc. Have your girl talk to her
doctor. Perhaps a diaphram would be
another idea since she can't use hormonal
bc

I was in a similar situation to your
girlfriend. My sister was on the pill for
about 10 minutes before getting a blood
clot and ending up in hospital. But she
smoked a pack a day plus she was
overweight. I was on the pill for about
15 years, with no problems, but I have
never smoked and I was not overweight
(then at least!). So I guess your gf will
have to talk to the doctor, but a lot of
them won't take the risk if there is
already a family history.
