My 5 yr old son is complaining of seeing colored spots. He also has asthma, is bright, creative, and impulsive. He has had a history of headaches, and there is a strong family history of migraines, although he doesn't complain of headaches when he's seeing the spots. Last night he saw them and then stated his head felt strange. Regarding Synesthesia-- I have it. I have the most common form-- when I hear names, numbers, days of the week, etc., I see them in color. This is true for any word but most prominent with names and numbers, and the colors are consistent. I don't know if this is related. I also have a high IQ (137).My son says the shapes he sees are in different shapes like continents, and they are colored but never black. He says he can't see through them. He had color confusion when he was younger, and I wonder if these other colors were running interference.

I just spoke with my pediatric group and was told seeing spots was not unusual at my child's age (5), however, they want to see him since he has history of headaches, etc. In some kids it can be occipital lobe seizures ( usually round colored spots or irregularly shaped. Migraine with aura usually has black squiggly lines or patterns. I got this info from googling the above mentioned diagnoses and reading medical articles. I will post again after my son sees his doctor, who also has special training in neurology.Appt is 10/07/09.

My daughter is almost 6 she has just recently told me about these spots she sees sometimes on the walls or t.v. ect... I asked her if it was from looking at the sun but she said no. She explains it as it being the "FUTURE" and then when it goes away it's a commercial in her eyes. She says it is beautiful and she enjoys seeing the colored dots. She is also currently taking Zyrtec for allergies is this a side affect of should I have her examined by an optomologist?

i am a 23 year old girl. and as far back as i can remember i see colors. when i was really little i used to see big circles of different colors that would dance before my eyes. as i got older the colors changed from being big circles to being parts of things. like ill see a rectangle of blue in someones hair when i know that it isnt there and i also see chrome flys (silver like spots that fade and brighten they are very very tiny and disappear ina matter of minutes) when i was 15 i had my first "dizzy spell" where i saw the colors and chrome flys then lost my vision completely and began to shake uncontrolably. i remember it happening and what was going on around me at the time as well. within the last 6 months they have gotten worse, to a point where i have 5 or 6 if not more of these dizzy spells preluded by colors smells and lights. so far drs say it petti mal seizures. there are a number of different neurological things that can be happening to who ever is seeing these colors or lights. if its your child take them seriously and get it looked into you never know if it could be something like epilepsy like it is in my case.

Colours and spots in eyes
My 5 year old daughter told us last night that she was seeing colours and dots and had a headache, after I noticed that she was opening her eyes very wide. She had her immunisations a month ago and has been unwell since. Has anybody elses children had immunisations close to this problem starting?

To Frances34: wow, wonder if the immunization had anything to do with it? My 6-yr old daughter over the last few weeks has complained of mild headaches, and then suddenly, over the last few days, talks about colored spots -- pink, blue, green, and they're round. They're off and on during the day & night. She is also very bright, outgoing, & creative and they're testing her for 1st grade gifted class. But, she had the seasonal flu vaccination about a month ago. Any correlation? I don't know. She actually had a CT scan & brain MRI in January after falling off the monkey bars at school, and those were normal. My husband does have a history of headaches for the last 1 1/2 years.

Daughter seeing floating red spots
I just found out last night that my 10-year old daughter has been seeing floating red spots for as long as she can remember. She never mentioned it before because she thought it was normal and everyone saw them. I was horrified. She describes them as little red specs that float from left to right (always left to right). They sometimes stop and one grows bigger and then they continuing floating. The appear brighter to her when the room is darker. She doesn't have allergies or take any medication. She is nearsighted and has an astigmatism, however she said she has been seeing the dots since before she had glasses. She is very smart, an excellent reader and writer and very good in math. She is in the 'talented and gifted' classroom at her school. Her last eye exam was in about 8 months ago when she got a new eyeglass prescription. I have her scheduled for an appt early next week just to make sure nothing else is going on, however, the eye doctors office didn't seem to alarmed and didn't indicate it was serious or an emergency of any sort. I will let you know what I find out.

Daughter sees blue spots
Thank heavens I found this website. I have been freaking out all day. My normally healthy 6-year-old daughter has been sick for a month or so. Had a cold a end of September; cough never went away, and turned into a nagging persistent cough. We went in two weeks ago and they dx'ed her with a possible sinus infection (she never had a fever; they said it was still possible). Unfortunately, that same day she had been feeling sick to her stomach, and so that turned into a week plus of vomiting and diarrhea, so we couldn't start the antibiotics until a couple of days ago. Seem to be helping with the mucus in her throat/postnasal drip, but she's still coughing.

Beginning last week, as the vomiting was clearing up, she started getting weird pains in her fingers and toes where she's have o flick them to deal with it, and at the same time she was breaking out in what seemed to be hives. A couple of times, she also had red, red cheeks, but for some reason the nurse I spoke with didn't think she had Fifth disease, although from everything I read, it certainly sounds like she could have it. Her older brother also had the diarrhea/nausea, and his hands were painful as well. No red cheeks though, and his symptoms cleared up more quickly. Her younger brother had vomiting and diarrhea, and at one point I wondered if he has Fifth because his cheeks were red (this was before my daughter ever started getting sick with the stomach bug).

ANYWAY, long story longer...the joint pains are slowly disappearing, but this morning she told me out of nowhere that she was seeing slowly flashing blue spots in front of her eyes. At the same time, she was having the discomfort in her fingers. She said she could see through them, although the big ones were getting in the way sometimes. She was sitting in bright light when it happened. I put her in a dim room to relax, and the spots slowly went away. She has since told me that this happens to her all the time, that it happens in bright light, and that it happens to everyone! But this is the absolute first I've ever heard her mention it. I plan to take her to the doctor tomorrow if (a) it happens again and/or (b) a rash that is showing up on her chest gets more pronounced -- again, could be another symptom of Fifth disease. I've been asking her every hour "Are you seeing spots now?" and she says no.

Additional background -- previous use of Pulmicort/Albuterol nebs for nighttime asthmatic coughing; previous use of Zyrtec for post-nasal drip that seemes to set off the nighttime coughing; seasonal flu shot a month ago (after cough started, though); exceedingly creative/artistic to a "wow" degree, like she thinks on a different plane than I do -- which is totally different from everyone else in our family; gifted in school -- reading at a 6th grade level (she's in first grade) and also gifted in math, although not to the 6th grade level.

I'll be watching this thread.

seeing flashes, colors, shapes, faces
I have been seeing color spots (blurred, flows, halo's (around peoples heads), and when I close my eyes at night, I see bright shapes, colors, and sometimes flashes of light, faces or images that I'm not sure of (people I havent met before, senarios, etc) really brief and weird. And then when I open my eyes, they're still there and slowly move around/fade/etc. I always thought these were glares and completely normal until after years, i brought it up with my husband, and asked a few others.
I thought this was normal for 26 yrs!
Im in fine health, I have a little acid reflux, but thats about it.
the older I get, the more i see. I also see thing move, shadows, out of the corner of my eye, and when I look theres nothing there.
strange.

I also have a son who is 7, and has seen spots for about 6 months. We have had his vision checked and he is 20-20, an MRI was normal....he sees colors at various times and sometime when he is active, and at other times when just sitting.....anyone get a diagnosis? Our ped said it could be related to migranes....only he doesn't get them

Colored Spots in eyesight
Hey folks.. I have been worried about my strange condition. I'm 44 and have been seeing colored spots for about six months off and on. I will try to explain what I see in as much detail as I can. I guess I would describe them as spots of vivid color, sometimes a circle or oval, with what looks like fractal colors inside or around the outside perimiter. Similar to a stained glass window with lots of colors and straight lines dividing the colors. It changes shape, gets bigger or smaller and after a while goes away. The spots are see through but very distracting.

I see from the posts a lot of children have similar experiences. Has or Is anyone my age 44 experiencing this phenomenon. Its freaking me out when it happens.

Thanks

Eye Anomaly
This is too weird. My daughter is 7 (almost Cool told me last night that she sees different colored spots (sometimes pink, some yellow, some purple, etc.) when she opens her eyes. Some of what you describe her is right on target with what she tells me she is seeing. Says it has been happening for a while. Haven't scheduled eye doc appt yet, but it doesn't sound too promising...based on what I have read in the above to actually diagnosing what would cause this. If anyone has an update that explained what would cause the visual disturbance would be interested to know.

Follow up to my last note. My daughter had a head injury 2-3 Christmas Eves ago. Had small internal bleed - but we were fortunate - it stopped on its own. I know head trauma can sometimes be associated with seizures -- she never had any. We have been lucky. Curious if anyone else exhibiting these symptoms may have had history of head injury?

My 7 year old too
My 7 year old son with autism and hereditary sensorimotor neuropathy (HSN) started complaining about colored spots last week. Also with this he has had increased combative behavior, urination accidents (he was potty trained) and confusion. EEG was normal. Neuro can't see him for a month. They tell me to monitor him closely and wait for my appointment. Opthamology is next week...
He is also intelligent, high functioning in regular 2nd grade general ed class... no Zyrtec but early asthma and still sues Albuerol occasionally....Is this what happens when our inhalers go HFA?

Two things:
1) elderly friend of mine had experienced visual disturbances, seeing faces as smeared half red/half blue. Lots of work-up and while not definitively diagnosed - the suspicion was it was related to a medication she was on...even though it was not listed as a known side effect. That was from her opthamolgist. So if your child is on a medication, it could have a hand in visual anomaly even if not listed as a known side effect.
2) My 7 year old daughter seeing colored spots periodically. Took her to pediatrician - normal neurological exam. She referred us to opthamologist. Of interest, my daughters last episode of visual issue was accompanied by very bad stomach pains, nausea and headache. At the time I thought her tummy issues were unrelated to the eye funkiness. However, our Doc suggested it could be abdominal migraines, although she would not hang her hat on it. Told us to keep a log of when it happens/duration and other issues (ie, headache, tummyache). Abdominal migraines apparently do hit kids ages 5-9.... Good luck all.

Hi guys. I am 14 years old and have been seeing these spots for as long as i can remember. I always thought there was something wrong with me, even as a child, and could never get up enough confidence to tell my parents about it. But one day when i was about 9, I decided i really did need/ want help and thought maybe the micro "sprinkles" (as i used to call them) could easily be stopped. After that day, my mom brought me to the eye doctor and got a response saying that i was fine and i was probably just "makeing it up".
I know for a fact that i wasnt, and can still remember being so freaked out by the many differing shapes formed within the colors. I see the sprinkles sometimes during the day, but its all amplified and noticable at night time in the dark when i'm laying in bed. I usually see the floating colors on my white walls/ ceilings. Ive been pretty good about the spot things all these years, and have just for the most part ignored them. But nonetheless, i still see them.
Ive read most of these comments and found the one by muddys13 to be the most comparable to my experiences. I have mild asthma and take an inhailer every once in a while. I also am pretty smart, get honors in all advanced placement classes, and play 3 instruments as well as participating in softball. I dont know if that has anything to do with the whole situation, but ive noticced that most of these other kids have asthma too. Also, when i was about 4, i ran into a tree by mistake and that day, had slight head trauma (again, i really dont know if that has anything to do with it, but in thinking it may have something to do neurologically). Im really freaked out and would really appreciate it if someone could maybe find an answer or help. Thanks.
