School whiteboard maybe responsible for some eye problems in children! I think I may have figured out one main reason for children seeing coloured spots in front of their eyes, especially with children around the age of 5 - 9. Our daughter has been complaining of seeing coloured spots, especially after school when she gets home and at night. The spots are less frequent now she is off school for summer holiday. At school the children are made to look at an electronic whitebaord, I am now convinced this maybe damaging her eyesight. She has said that it is bright. Now she is off school the colors are far less, I am convinced that the white board is to blame for the colors. Hope this helps some people. I shall be telling the school when they start again.

I'm an Optometrist with an 11yr old patient describing black AND white dots "like the TV when the signal is lost". He sees them in dim illumination and darkened rooms. They disappear or are repressed in brighter lighting. They "move around fast". He takes allergy medication, has color deficiency and family history of color deficiency and is a +3.00 hyperope in both eyes. Examination revealed no condition to explain this symptom. I think from what others are describing, he must be seeing "visual snow". This is a complaint that I've never heard of until now. Thank you for the forum. I'll be recommending an MRI, neuro, and psych eval.

children seeing spots
Hey everyone. Well, my son who just turned 5 in June, takes zyrtec, has allergies and asthma sees black and pink dots. While I was putting him to bed tonight he started telling me about them. I was worried at first but after reading most of the posts on this site (and other sites), I believe he is fine. Thank goodness for Google.

seeing colored spots
My 5 year old daughter has been seeing color dots. She told me she started seeing them at 3 years old. She says sometimes they are different shapes, rectangle, circles and tear drops. She says that some are shapes we have no name for them yet. She says that sometimes they come like a blink and other times they linger. She doesn't see red often. I hear her say pink, yellow, green, and purple mostly. She sees them everywhere at any time. Sometimes lots in a room, and sometimes just a few. Even days where hardly none. I believe her because I see her trying to catch them but she says her hand goes through them. She's also seen black dots and she's not comfortable with those. I don't think its eye problems, she's not one to make things up. She's adamant and clear in what she sees. She's not scared of them, in fact, she enjoys the colors mostly. I am so glad she's not alone in seeing these things.

when i was a child (i am 17 now), i saw tiny spots of coloured particles that would apperate and then revolve like a galaxy above me, before decending down like what i would imagine snowflakes to be like in still conditions.
i was very scared and very euphoric at the same time.

Hi I'm 17 and I've been seeing coloured spots ever since I can remember. In fact I was seeing them just now before I decided to google it and see of there was any explanation as to why. I've never seen black spots only white ones and colors ranging from gold to pink to green to yellow. I see them all the time and sometimes they are like waves in their moving other times they just kind of do their own thing and float around. They are sometimes accompanied by sharp burst of pain in my eye especially with the gold and white ones which are the brightest but most the time i don't even notice them I'm so used to it. I thought everyone saw spots really before I found this and never thought it was prudent to bring it up... I suffer from hayfever and migraines run in my family though I've never had them. I've got near perfect vision and never felt the need for glasses, if anyone finds out what I'd wrong please do tell!!

I am 20 years old and have been seeing spots for as long as I can remember. I first mentioned it to my parents when I was about 6 and we went to an eye doctor once but nothing came of it. The spots are translucent, but bright vivid colors. I usually just look through them and the only time they really affect or bother me is when trying to drive, because sometimes it can make stoplights or brake lights difficult to see.
The spots have gotten better as I've gotten older. Rather than seeing them every day, I usually just see them once a week or so now. When I was younger I never got headaches, but in the past year or so I've been getting migraines.
I had pretty much decided to just live with this, but if anyone knows what it is, that would be wonderful.

Ahhh I love how I'm not the only one with this darn problem!!! I've been having these Colored spots for as long as I can remember, I'm 14 now. I wish so badly to find an explanation for this group of vision problems I have...I get these "colored spots" constantly, they'll appear in my vision, sometimes one at a time, sometimes a lot, some small, some big, they then twinkle a little, get bigger or smaller then burn out, leave an afterimage and then that dissapears too...its like magical and disturbing at the same time!! I see them at night, in low light mostly, not outside cuz its too bright...though I do have a very strong sensitivty to light...ummm I see trailers, which are like afterimages that follow an object after you look away, like a ghost..umm i get this weird pulsating in my vision even wen im not doing anything, and I get frequent headaches, and moderate eye pain...So i'm guessing that the spots are neurological because i can't imagine our retina its self doing that sort of thing, but my pulsating vision may be I dont know, something more grim, anyways I gotta live with this daily i guess..

Reading these messages has reasrred me that my 7 year old son isnot alone in seeing these spots. I have been very concerned and afraid to take him to the doctors because i wasnt sure if he was just tierd as he has had a few late nights lately. I have noticed though it seems to happen to a lot of children between 5-9. Thanks guys for sharing your own problems so we know we arent alone. Even if we don't know the answers least we know our children seem perfectly healthy. x

seeing colored spots
We learned that our 6 year old sees spots when she asked if there was anything we could do to help get rid of the spots that get in the way of seeing the words when she reads. Although the spots appear to be translucent most of the time she says she has to concentrate to ignore them and sometimes the number of spots interfere with seeing all the letters on the page. The spots are worse on white backgrounds (black print on white pages, white board) but she sees them on colored background too. Sometimes they move slowly and at other times they don't appear to move at all. Most of the time they are blue, green and red. The spots appear randomly but she says they are worse in sunlight and in fluorescent lighting. She also sees them in the dark. She was able to adjust the size and numbers of spots, their color and opacity, and their rates of movement to help me better understand what she sees.

SEEING SPOTS AND COLORS FOR 23 YEARS+
Hey, I might be really late on the convo but I have been seeing colored, lights, specs, spots since I was 5 maybe younger. I did have night terrors, sleep wlk, started having mirgraines with aura when I was 11 and still have them. Have better than perfect vision minus the bluriness i sometimes get from the white rooms or white paper (which causes me to see colors flash like watercolor). By the way I am a 28year old female I have become successful attained an MBA go to the opthamologist every 2 years to keep the eyes checked. Have been to the neurologist. When I was a child and even now sunglasses helped. Yes like many others I do have allergies and sinus issues but MSG synthetic and naturally occuring as well as the artificial sweeteners aggrivate it. I read that in some magazine at the dr.s office. But long story short I still have not solved the mystery. good and bad to know other people have the exact things going on. I got my tests and classwork printed on manilla(beige) paper and even wore sunglasses in class. in elementary school all through college (doctor's note)to make it easier. SORRY LOTS OF ERRORS IT IS 1 AM.

Hi everyone

I am 23 now and I also see coloured sparkles, squiggles and have since I was a very young child. I've been to see the eye Doc and had my brain scanned and everything is normal, in fact really good I have 20/20 vision.
I also sometimes see the auric colour of an object after I look away from it. For example when you look into the sun and look away you get a blue dot in your vision for a little while. I've noticed that it usually happens with brightly coloured objects or objects that bounce light off themselves (reflect), even the slightest amount.
Since the Doc's can't give an answer and I've been given the all clear, I did some research myself. It seems to be we're either seeing natural light energy e.g. like the coloured pixels in our TV that form coloured pictures. (We had to create TV projection from somewhere-electricity/energy/colour).Every thing is made up of matter and light energy.
Or perhaps you're sensitive and can see auras. It's not all that crazy when you think about it. We know energy exists e.g. magnetism-we can't see it but it is used all the time. Or battery energy/power.
I feel it is kind of ignorant to think that energy is not real and that some people can see it. I mean we know it exists we use it in our everyday lives. (Listed in the examples). It could simply be evolution; we are slowly one by one improving our senses.
Also it could be if you are sensitive-having the ability to see auras. Then it is suggested that you could be seeing angelic sparkles. Apparently when angles move through air/matter it causes friction resulting in sparks/sparkles, like with any friction of objects that is rubbed against each other, heat or sparks result.
I do stress that you -Please do go and get checked out, by your eye doc and GP as it could be a sign of something more serious.
If you get the all clear then I guess your special for being able to see light. I never found this to be scary, slightly cool I suppose.

Child seeing colored spots
Hi, I am so glad I came across these postings. I have a 9-year-old daughter who has seen colored spots since she can remember. She is very active in sports and does very well in school. She has drawn several pictures of them and describes them as very colorful and all over her vision.
She has seen a pediatric ophthalmologist, pediatric neurologist, had several CT scans, MRI's, and EEG's all coming back "normal".
She was given topramax to see if it would help, but it only helps with the occasional headaches, not the spots.
I had the neurologist suggest she was just making them up and I became very angry at her. I told her that my daughter only told me about the spots one day when I was at the start of a migraine and I told her that I had squiggly lines in my right eye and that's when she first told me about the colored spots. She is not an attention seeking child.
I searched the internet and finally found this. I printed some of the postings and just recently saw the neurologist again and showed them to her. She apologized and said that since the spots don't seem to interfere with daily life, no one is rushing to find a cure or cause for them.
I am thinking of starting a website so we can all post our stories and comply information with the hopes of maybe finding a doctor out there that knows what is going on with our children and can give us answers and peace of mind that they will be ok.

I didn't know this eye thing was soooo common
I'm 18 and see colours everywhere, dots, streaks, patterns, I've even seen the form of a woman dancing made up of the colored spots when I was listening to pink floyd haha
The only way to describe what I see and many of your kids see is "sun spots" a I call them
It's the same dots you would see after looking directly at the sun and then looking away
I've had headaches since I was a kid and although not painful I would like to know what these dots mean or if it's diagnosed as anythjng

Seeing colored circles.....
My 6 yr old daughter just starting mentioning seeing colored circles (spots I guess) for 2 or 3 days now. She has seasonal allergies (runny nose) but nothing serious. She does get the occasional ear infection following allergies. I only give her medication for her allergies when needed. She doesn't stay on them for long periods of time. She is healthy, active, smart and very artistic. She is in dance and loves to sing often making up her own songs (as I guess most 6 yr olds do). The does complain that her eyes hurt like a burning feeling so I think thats allergies. It seems like the colors come and go. The colors she has mentioned are green and yellow. I guess my first step will be an opthamologist and go from there. Praying everything is okay.

seeing lights
well i have a 5 yr old and he has been seeing orange and purple lights he says. they are very tiny and they are bunches of them. i have looked it up on the internet and it seems like what he's seeing is called Orbs. they are spirits. I read that it usuually happens to younger children as they are just so open to things we adults are not. i do believe in auras and spirits. i do feel like this is more frequent then it was a yr ago. I'm looking into it more as now it is bothering me more than him but now he is saying that it kinda makes him scared. so this is where it concerns me more. at first i didn't make a big deal out of it, i would tell him to say "go away and leave me alone" and then say his prayers. We are Catholic so we have bedtime prayers. i just told him maybe it's his great grandma who passed away and didn't get to see him. My husband isn't a believer so it's kinda hard to explain to him about the spiritual things. i will just have to look it up and see what i can do to help my son deal with this. i do believe that children do see things more then what we do.

In response to hannaht87: Yes I am exactly the same! I am 26 this year 2010. Have had it all my life and it has never gone away. I started noticing it at a very young age somewhere between 4 to 6 years of age I would guess. Before that I guess you just don't think anything of it.. No headaches because of it, no allergic to anything, nothing.. just the colours all over my vision but can see through them and can easy live with it. It gets much worse when I am tired, when its dark at night and I am more still in bed, and if I focus on something really really hard like for eg the tv 'especially at night or when I'm tired' then I get a full on tunnel vision where I only see the tv and everything else goes crazy with all sorts of random colours and often darkens. You just simply get used to it. It's like seeing auras or being able to see the energy of atoms as such. I personally believe it's hyper sensitive pupils and an over active photographic 3D memory but which is a very "selective memory" as you only remember what you want to but the rest stays burnt into your eyes/mind as colours as you don't find it important enough to really remember. Ask your kids if they are good at remembering what a 3D setting looks like.. like say for example get them to describe a house and section they know well. Ask them what they can remember about the house or car or even a toy.. as said it is "selective" which means they will only remember things 'but Very Well' which they are interested in.. So best ask them first something they like.. then get them to describe it.. a house and section is best as it really shows their 3d mind. Ask them to describe their favorite house they visit or live in regularly then see if it is min 85% accurate. If this is the case and they describe their symptoms to be the same as me and hannaht87 then there is nothing to worry about, it's just something they have to lean to accept. It is a very good skill which unfortunately comes with the pesky colours.. These kids are normally excellent with lego etc and will make great engineers! They are normally creative and cleaver and in tune and down to earth but not perfect at everything.
