My problem is dealing with on my left side under my rib cage area, I get sharp pains and they come and go.I only seem to get them at work under stress, my doctor wants me to take a low dose of anti -depressent they seem to help but I hate to feel like ihave to take something like that. My doctor said you have serotonin in your stomach and that is why alot of depression sufferers have stomach complaints. Is this true?

I have gastritis as well. I have never heard of there being serotonin in your stomach. That's a new one. I have heard of people being put on anti-depressants to help with stomach issues because stress and worrying can cause alot of digestive problems and most of those things are started in the brain. Anti-depressants work by increasing the serotonin--a mood chemical--in the brain. Once the serotonin levels are better then the stomach issues usually are solved as well. That's my theory on it...But I am no Dr. Lol!

Thats a new one on me too, but I am no Dr. It might be worth getting a second opinion to be sure its the right treatment for your symptoms!

I've been diagnosed with gastritis, and my doctor told me that stress can make stomach acid problems much worse, because stress increases the acid. So I would assume that is why an anti depressant would be prescribed. I am not currently on anti depressants, however I am severely anxious and stressed all of the time and would almost guarantee my acid problems would diminish if I weren't worried 24/7.
