O.K. I've been lurking around this board
for a couple days, trying to find the
answers to my questions. I was unable to
find them though>.<
i'm really embarassed to even talk about
it, but here I go.
First problem; during sex, i've noticed a
kind of thick white sticky discharge, not
like a yeast infection though (i've had
many, so I know what the consistency of
that is...). I've had this for awhile,
and I did mention it to my doctor before.
She said it was a "little thick", but
nothing to worry about. Sometimes it
will be like a clump of white discharge on
his (my husbands) penis. Not like
cottage cheese consistency though.
Sometimes it will coat his penis.
And sometimes an "onion" like smell, which
can be quite strong, comes from "down
there", and it's noticable during sex.
It's been going on for awhile (2 or 3
years), not all the time, but enough to be
irritating, and it's been more frequent
lately. I've tried to do internet
searches for vaginal odor of onions, but
couldn't find anything. I thought it
might be because I was eating too many
onions, so I stopped eating them all
together, with no luck. Maybe it's my
diet? Or not enough water intake?
I don't know. I guess I was just curious
if this happens to anyone else.
Keep in mind, it's not all the time, just
sometimes. The thick white vaginal
discharge seems to be an ordinary
accurance though.
Any help, feedback or reassurance would
help me soo much!
(i'm going to address this to my doctor
next time I go in btw)
thanks!

It might be diet. What bc are you on?
Maybe that's it. Sorry about the onion
thing, sounds rather unpleasant. Do you
wash the area thoroughly? With a
non-glycerin soap? Have you asked your
gyno about it when you've gone? Try
looking at those special
soaps/ointments/whatever that are made
specifically for that area.

I'm on tri-levlen birth control. I do
wash very thouroughly down there, I
started using dove unscented, but was
using a scented soap a year or so ago. I
switched because I was getting yeast
infections and bladder infections rather
frequently.
I've talked to a doctor about the
discharge awhile ago, but never the smell
that sometimes happens (out of
embarrassment).
These problems didn't start happening
until I started sleeping with my
boyfriend, now husband, for a year.
Everything seemed normal until a year into
our relationship, then bam! This bs.
It's not the bc, i've been on the same
pills since I was 13, so i'm very sure
that's not why. Oh, and I also get
frequent bladder infections too!
Sometimes right after sex (another reason
why I need to go to the doctor...).
I just have never heard of anyone else
having such problems, and wanted to see if
I was the only one. I feel so alone =-(

I Think I Know Wat It Is...bacterial Vaginosis. Posted: 11-30-05 15:01pm
I've been with my boyfriend for a year and
four months. But, not until this upcoming
september of 2005 I started to get yeast
infections. I never had one, so I went to
my doctor to look at it and I was right it
was a yeast infection which in medical
terms is (koh+) or yeast infection
positive. I got two types of medication
which was diflucan and metrozonale 7
(monistat 7) it worked, but then two
weeks later I got it again so I took the
monistat 7. It worked fine, but not until
the 14th of november did I start to have
the funny onion like smell on and off.
That same day I had sex with my boyfriend
and he ecjaculated inside of me. (mind
this was the same day and the symptoms
happened after sex) I washed three times a
day. In the morning, after school, and
before bed. On the 16th I went to the
doctor for ecp pills, a pregnancy test,
and a yeast infection test. You can get
yeast infections if you're pregnant, or
have hiv. I also asked my mom because she
is a rn (reigistered nurse.) I took the
ecp pills that day, tested negative for
std's. But I was (koh+),but it wasn't a
yeast infection it was "bacterial
vaginosis." it's common in women, like
yeast infections. If you use tampons
(scented or unscented), bodywash, body
spray in your *area*, from e.Coli (which
is when after you use the bathroom and you
wipe from the rectum to the vagina), from
tight clothes, non-cotton underwear, and
non constant changing of cotton wash rags.
Cure: drink water, don't sleep w/
underwear and get monistat 7 or vaginal
cream. Happy to help

Well hun, I must and hate to admit that
something happened to me like that of the
subject your speakin about. Except it was
more of a diff. Smell then wut u
described. I lived with it for mths and I
just got the man of my dreams. When we
would have sex it would smell and I would
discharge also. But I finally got tired
of wanderin; have u ever considered it may
be just a bacteria in the uterus. If not
then I would advise u too. The doctor
will give u a horrible tasting pill but
hey I tell u wut it worked and ive been
(scent free) for over a year, and enjoying
our sex life far more than before. Just
tell the doctor wut the discharge smells
like, you wont regret it I hope.
Good luck

Omg labella! I am sorry that this
happened to you too, but am soo glad i'm
not the only one! I was beggining to
think I was some sort of freak!
I will try sleepin without the
undies>.< and i've been drinking a
lot of water this past couple weeks,
hopefully that will help a little=)
my husband ejaculates inside of me every
time we have sex, but I always go to the
bathroom right after. I'm sure some stays
up there, so maybe that might be a
contributing factor? I don't know, but I
will make a doctor appt. And ask her what
she thinks, and ask for a bacterial
vaginosis test. I'm not so embarassed to
ask her about it now that I know i'm not
alone!
I do wear thong underwear, tampons, and
tight clothes, but I have for a long time,
before all this happened, so I doubt
that's the reason (i wipe front to back
though=o).
Once again, thanx, to all of you for your
replies, you've made me feel so much
better =)
Hi. Sometimes, the body releases
different textures of secretions than
others. So make a little diary: what time
of the month is it thickest? If its after
your period, its probably around ovulation
- which almost always produce a thicker,
even an odor. Its normal, especially if
you have released an egg. Also, sometimes
if you pay close attention - for women if
you eat strong smelling foods, sometimes
you can smell them when you urinate and
when you wipe. You may even smell it in
your sweat. If you are not hurting
anywhere, no irregular bleeding, nothing
unusual - then just let your body do its
thing. Sometimes, when my husband and I
are intimate, I too produce a real thick
discharge, especially a day after I have
ovulated or if its been a while or if I am
very stressed, and just need to release
something!!! If you are still uncertain,
go back to the doctor again.

Your Mans' Health Is a Factor Posted: 12-02-05 16:31pm
Men can carry both yeast and bacterial
infections symptom free, and pass them
back to us. As women we often carry the
embarrassment of smells and funky
dischange, but it can be an issue we share
with our men. If you are having a
reccurance routinely after sex, it is
worth your man getting checked out too. I
had a partner go on a kill-the-yeast-diet
with me because I kept getting yest
infections after sex. It worked. One
month of disciplined eating (no sugar,
dairy, fermented foods, ect...) and my vag
was healthy and happy again, and no
problems after sex.
Remember, men can carry yeast and
bacterial infections symptom free and pass
them back to us every time we get rid of
them and have sex again.
It takes two to manage the sexual health
of a partnership, you have nothing to be
embarrassed about.

I had this same exact thing happen after
starting birth control. I had it for
three months, and after reading this forum
I bought a monistat-1. I did it on
wednesday, and since then I have been
symptom-free since then, knock on wood!!

... Could Be Experiencing the Same Thing... Posted: 12-11-05 00:55am
I think i'm having similar troubles...
I'm not positive I have a yeast infection
again... My vaginal area is
irritated/itchy... But there is no
burning or heavy discharge??? Could it be
something else??? Also, if a condom was
used, can my partner still be carrying the
yeast infection? If so... What needs to
be done? Does he have to go the doctor or
is there an over-the-counter remedy for
him as well??
... On another note... I am currently
un-insured and very low on money... Where
can I go for a discounted/free check-up??
Are there such clinics? Any suggestions
would be helpful???

There are two other type of infections
besides the yeast that can change your
discharge.
One is bacterial vaginosis. With this
discharge can be milky white or gray and
there is a fishy smell. The other is
trichomoniasis but with this the discharge
is usually yellowish-green.
You probably have an infection.
I have bacterial vaginosis. The doctor
says its really common and you don't even
need to be sexually active to get it. I
had no idea that I had it but she noticed
during my checkup because I had extra
discharge and it was white.
You might have that but you can only treat
it with antibiotics from your doctor.

I know where your coming from...I also
have an oniony odor from my vaginal area
and not only there but also on my areolas
(nipples). Ive noticed that besides the
smell, it also tastes horibble! I know
this because when my husband gives me oral
I smell it on his breath and when he
kisses my nipples its also on his breath
and its gross. Ive done my own reasearch
on the internet and I think what we have
is over active sweat glands (apocrine) to
be exact. These apocrine sweat gland are
only located in the armpits, areolas,
vaginal area and anus. These are the ones
responsible for onion like smell or
pheromones, wich also taste gross. They
are activated when we become exited or
scared with adrenaline. Ive tried
everything to treat this but the only
remedy ive found is botox injections in
the infected region. This works by
blocking the sweat glands thus preventing
the bacterial fluid (aprocine smell) to
come to the skin surface. The only
problem with this is that I heard its
expensive. Im trying to save up for this
and get it done. I think its worth it.
Let me know what you think and if anyone
else suffers this as well, let me here
from you!!

Update... Posted: 01-11-06 16:40pm
Before I said that I had been symptom free
after doing the monistat-1 treatment.
Well, that was before my christmas break
from college, where I take showers, not
baths. I returned home and started
taking baths. It happened again, so I
did another monistat-1, and it itched
unbelievably. So, I have been taking
showers since, and I have a little itching
still sometimes. When I go back to the
doctor in february I am going to tell them
what's going on and see if there is
something they can do for it. I think it
is just my birth control, because it is a
symptom, but I have no idea...

so, I ended up going to the doctor, to see
if I had a yeast infection, and it turned
out I had bv and a very rare kind of yeast
infection (very embarassing >.<). I
got two different types of medications,
and some medication for my husband too.
We didn't have sex for 3 weeks (ouch), did
everything our doctor said, then when we
did have sex, I still had sort of a thick
discharge, and later noticed that faint
onion smell.
What you have mentioned here sounds like
something I should talk about with my
doctor! I forgot to mention the weird
odor I was getting to my doctor, but when
I go in for my physical I will definatly
ask, and get tested for an infection just
in case. I'm really glad you posted this
information though, because it really
sounds like what I have. The thing with
me is that I dont get the thicker white
discharge when I masturbate, and I rarely
ever smell the onion like smell unless i'm
having sex. My husband is quite large,
and maybe the reason it's happening is
because it gets so far up in there?
I'm on the pill, and I know that it's
supposed to make the mucus around your
cervics thicker, maybe that's it? I don't
know. I do know I should be over these
symptoms if they were the symptoms of bv
and a yeast infection, so now i'm looking
for other reasons this might be happening.

I would suggest visiting your local
pharmacy or wal mart. They have little
suppositories you put insert in your
vagina and it helps maintain a healthy ph
level. They work wonders and help keep
things fresh and clean and help prevent
bacterial and yeast infections. They
don't cause discharge like monistat ovules
and such do. They are safe to use up to
3x a week but can be used less frequent
than that. Check it out!

I Found a Cure For the "onion" Smell Due to Areola Posted: 09-16-07 16:17pm
I was so relieved when I logged on and
realized that I was not the only one
suffering from the onion smell around my
vaginal area. I was reading one post that
said that they were thinking of botox.
Although that is a good alternative, I
can't afford it so I did some research and
found a product called botisol. These
people said that the cause of the odor is
bacteria that is located inside those
sweat areas that comes out and causes the
odor. Their product is supposed to kill
the bacteria from the inside rather than
trying to mask it from the outside like
deoderants and such. Anyway, at this
point I am at my wits end so I ordered my
bottle today. I will let you all know how
it turns out.
