Q: Redness Under Foreskin

Hey, i'm a 16 year old who has had a lot of problem's with my foreskin in the past. I know this seems very, very silly, butit was only about a year ago that I actually learned to retract my foreskin and clean under it(!) anyway, the build up of smegma and such made the head of my penis and everything under the foreskin incredibly sensitive/painful and red. Anyway, i've kept up good hygene habits for a year now but nothing seems to be getting any better. I've tried creams and such to treat things such as yeast infections but that seems to just make it worse until I stop using it. Anyway its been 3 months since I last used a cream, I wash and dry under the foreskin everyday, but nothing is making the pain and redness go away. Any suggestions on what to try next would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

I'm a doctor and what you're describing sounds like "balantitis", which is probably caused by phimosis (tight foreskin). If your foreskin is too tight, you may need to have it looked at by a doctor. You may need corrective surgery to loosen the skin or a circumcision.

Regarding your hygiene, you should wash the head of your penis several times a day. One trick: buy pre-moistened wipes (like the kind used for babies, "butt wipes") and every time you urinate, pull your foreskin back and thoroughly wipe the head of your penis and the corona (ring around the head). Make sure no lint or smegma builds up around the head, and keep the urine off it.

Another trick, when you're in your bedroom, alone, walk around nude and let your genitals "air out". Keeping them trapped in underwear and pants all day keeps the moisture and bacteria trapped inside the foreskin. If you are nude more, if possible, you'll avoid bacterial buildup. Also, when you're nude, or in private, retract your foreskin more often.

Proper hygiene is keeping it clean more than once per day.
