Q: Unusual Names Vs the Top 100

I am an aquarian. An artistic, creative sort of person. I naturally find myself trying to find unusual or create unusual names. I have been getting a little bit of heat lately from people who seem to think choosing a baby name is about flipping to the top 100 names page of your baby name book instead of actually having a flip through and finding something more original. To be clear I have nothing against those people who use traditional names, they're popular because they're good, but some people have very closed minds.

Are original names such as morpheus or havenlei (my current boy and girl choices) so bad? People sometimes make the quite valid point that children with unusual names are more likely to be picked on at school but I didn't have an unusual name and I was picked on and I knew children with weird names that were incredibly popular so I think it has no bearing.

I just wanted to start a topic to discover who likes more unusual names and who likes the traditional names. Or maybe you like neither. It would be great to hear some name suggestions too - here are some I have had on my lists recently.

I like all sorts of names, made up, combination, popular, the only names I don't really like are some of the celebrity kids names such as moon unit or apple just to name a few. I like the name chrishelle its my niece's name chris is her nanna's name and shelle is taken from her mum's mn michelle so it has meaning to it. I like the name hayley (my daughter's name) and thats a really commen name.

Crishelle is very different. I have known a few parents who have combined their names. Friends of mine named lawrence and theresa named their daughter lawresa as a combination of their names, which is very sweet.

Hayley is close to holly (my name) and to havenlei (the girls name I have chosen right now). So obviously it's one I like. :d

Kk - you are very sweet. I really think everyone is creative at something but I am a little more anile that most so I will actually cover paper in scribblings of names I am trying to invent while watching telly or something. Sad isn't it?

Yes, I need two names to match and also be unique.

Samara, samael--is the only two I can think of. I know samuel means "from .God" or of .God.

Before I thought it might be twins I said "samuel william bradford wells"

still thinkng and deciding--i will let you know

Wow quite a good list of names!

Annalise I have loved since early early neighbours days. Bryony is a name I wanted a while ago but hubby didn't like. Holly is on your list which is so cool. I saw today that this woman knew twins who were named ivy and willow. Isn't that adorable? I saw ivy on your list and it reminded me.

I love the name noah it's getting very popular now. I've always like elijah, which isn't on your list but it's sort of similar to a few of the names you have already.

Before five months - that's kinda sweet. I take it you waited for your scan to know exactly what the sex was??

Hubby has decided he doens't like havenlei now and so my hunt began tonight to find an unusual but feminine girls name. Hubby is very much into unusual names too - morpheus was his choice and he has insisted on it for about two years now.

My brother knew a girl from college named tarthra and that was unusual so I suppose I am looking for something like that - a one off name that is still pretty and simple and girlie.

How hard can it be???

i knew what all my pregnancy's were, boy or girl, without the ultra sound.

I had one u/sound tech teasing me saying, you sure it's a girl and he had just seen it was a girl.

I love the name calliope -it is what I wanted to name my baby if he had been a girl. Calli for short. My boyfriend hated it though and he got to name our son (that was the deal) it is not extremelly unusual but not common either. My son's name is trey.

Lil_blaze - calliope is beautiful, and it means "beautiful singing voice" which I think it an awesome meaning! I hope you get your girl soon, I have my first cycle of ivf on the tenth of january and I am quietly hoping I have a girl. I am sort of addicted to pink (it's my favourite colour) and all things girlie and pretty and I just think it would be fun to be able to buy dolls and dresses and cute pink sparkly glittering things for her.

I prefer traditional, classic names over creative ones....Here are my thoughts spelling & pronuciation will be an issue all through the child's life, you made a good point about kids picking on kids regardless but I ask why not give you child a name that is easy to go through life with without having to offer and explanation or spelling lesson of their name. Most importantly, I would be very careful when naming a daughter- I think some of the new creative names sound like stripper, prono names - just ask a guy if you are not sure on some:-) my sister's name is daria - not so unusal now but growing up in rural sc in the 70's it was a bit odd. She had all the name calling ie diarrhea. Nobody ever could pronounce her name properly. I can remember she'd tell people is dar-ia as in car. So I say if you must use a creative name for your child why not use it as a middle name? Who knows maybe a name helps determine who that child will become...True in the case of my sister. She now lives in khasakstan where daria is as common as mary is in the us...She even has a cute russian nickname dasha to go along w/ it. But she did opt to give her children very traditional first names daniel alan, hope d'lara & david (being born today we hope) middle name tbd so that may tell you a little something about how she (a child w/ a different name) feels about naming children. I however, have a very traditional name angela marie & have always loved my name. Good luck & happy naming!

Just My 2 Cents...

I prefer more creative names... But some people can go way too far with being creative... (twins named lawasha and ladrya) I didn't realize that until I moved to atl... Anyway, my daughters name came from mine and my sisters' middle names... From janene and rae = janae (juh-nay)... I only knew of one janae when I named her and I moved here a couple years ago, and their are a million of them...Janay, janea, janai, jenae, jenay...Etc... And I consider 'janae' a simple name, but ppl have called her jane, janie, and jana... Her biological knew I loved prince, so he said her middle name should be adore... One of her sister's (from her biological) is named sidarian divine... I like that one... My bf has a daughter named bilan (not sure of the spelling, but it's pronounced bee-lahn)... I met a woman here that named her little girl princess tia... I thought that was cute...

You have some great original names there! I chose different names for my children, although my eldest was uncommon at birth, but it is common now.
I have three boys:

aidan - celtic - firey one

malik - egyptian - master or owner

ronan - celtic - pledge or oath (some say baby seal?)

we had great big long lists with all sorts of weird names on it each pregnancy! Took us a long time to agree.

I don't like either. Top 100 is boring and trendy to me, and I wouldn't name my child something unusual that's just made up or put together...I like to use old names that haven't been used in a while. Just my opinion...But everyone's different and a name's just a name, so be creative and do whatever feels right!
