Q: My Baby Is Having Trouble Breathing...

My nine month old son is disabled. Along with his many disabilities, he suffers from severe bronchial spasms, (pediatric specialist says that it will not be considered asthma until age 2). He takes albuterol, xopenex, and pulmicort via nebulizer several times each day. He also takes prednisone and prelone steriods orally, most days of the week. He also takes prevacid, zantac and reglan throughout the day to help his gastro intestinal disease, which causes him to reflux, and at times, asparate, which fills his lungs, and makes it even harder for him to breathe. Along with these disorders, he has apnea, and even when his lungs seem clear he stops breathing in his sleep. He also has cranial synostosis which is causing pressure on his brain. He has weak muscle tone in his lower back, legs, and neck. Also, he is profoungly deaf. All of these illnesses may be irrelevant to his asthma, but maybe they are not. Maybe someone here can help me put the peices together. Right now, my main concerns are this: can taking all of these asthma meds. Cause long term damage? Can he become dependant upon them? Is there any herbal or "wives-tale" remedies that we can try at home? Can his prolonged lack of sufficient oxygen cause him to have more damage or possibly retardation? Lastly, is there anyone out there that can or has a child who can relate to anything that I have mentioned above?

Please help me to help my baby.

Thank you,

a teen mommy of two,
marissa

If he is on xopenex and pulmicort, they are treating him for asthma, whether they say it or not. If these meds do not help, especially the xopenex, it most likely is not asthma. Has there been any improvement after starting these meds? It seems to me like he is on too many medications that are the same type. I would seek a second opinion. Lack of oxygen is extremely detrimental to the health and can cause brain damage. I strongly urge you to take the child to a pulmonologist and gastroenterologist.
