Q: Solution for Communication Problem

Here's the problem: i'm too tough. I'm just too tough. I don't really connect to my friends and the talk is just loose and polite. Bigger problem: I can't connect to women. I'm distant and reserved as hell. As soon as we get too close, I put up a huge inner steel barrier that says "no further". Thing is I do miss it, being in a relationship, so I go around feeling terrible, being ineffective at work and being brief with my friends. At times I get really angry with life, go for an intense run or lift weights like crazy and that numbs the pain. But that's not a reasonable way to live. I've got to de-toughen and open up myself, start to take chances. Question is how?

You got solutions? I'd be really thankful for your input.
