Well from what you tell me there seem to be history of mental illness in your family, and if you're saying your un able to work and go to school because of your depression I would go see a doctor. Did you know that if some one is bipolar it takes an avrg of 6 to 8 years before they get a diagnoses. Why so long it's because doctors, the paitent(spelling?) ,and parents see it all differently if that makes sence..
Here some questions a doctor might ask to distinguish bipoalr mood swings from normal mood variability.
Do your mood swings cause problems in your social or family life?
Do your mood swings lead to decreases in your work productivity that last more than a few days?
Do your mood states last for days at a time with little relief,or do they change when something good happens?
Do other people notice and comment when your mood shifts?
Do your mood changes go along with noticeable changes in thinking, perceiving, sleeping, and/or engry or activity levels?
Do your mood swings ever get so out of hand that the police hae to be called or a hospitalization becomes necessary?
The criteria for diagnosis of bipolar(manic-depressive) disorder.
Psychiatrist and pstchologist rely on dsm-iv your doctor will first identfy which symptoms you have, how severe these symptoms are and how long
they have lasted. From your particular pattern of symptoms he or she will then determine if the diagnosis of bipolar disorder outlined in the dsm-iv fits you. If it does your doctor will then be give a label of bipolar. Then break it down to as you have type 1,type2,type 3 etc etc etc.
