Q: Constant Throat Clearing
asked by: purpelnoon on November 15th, 2005

I've had a constant need to clear my throat for a few years now. There is actually mucous in the form of a post nasal drip so I know it is not neurological. It seems to get worse particularly after a meal. I've gone to an ent and allergist and no one seems to have an answer. It is really only an annoyance to me and others but I want to be sure i'm not damaging my throat by always claring it. It doesn't hurt or feel sore.
Do I have any options with how I can be helped? Thanks!

Sounds like acid reflux. Do a search on acid reflux, and you'll see your syptoms are acid reflux disease, or gerd

Thanks. It seems others have said the same thing. I guess I will try a couple months of proton pump inhibitors to see if they help. Funny how I dont have any reflux symptoms such as burning or heartburn but I guess I can still have reflux.

I did have a friend though who had it worse than me and he eliminated sugar and white flour as much as he could from his diet and he no longer has the problem.

Throat Clearing Especially After Eating
I feel the need to clear my throat after eating, a condition I have not always had. When I was younger I had none of these problems. I went through a period where I had asthma attacks and was prescribed Nasacort. I only mention that because I've heard this problem associated with asthma. I have gone to throat specialist and they find nothing. I have been allergy tested, barium-swallow-tested, I've had a doctor put a camera up my nose and down my throat to see if they could see anything and there was nothing. I've been put on Prilosec, Singulair, all sorts of allergy meds and none have helped. I'm not sure why but for 1/2 an hour after I eat I am constantly clearing my throat. I also notice that when I lay down in bed and start to relax I have an urge to cough and I do so and after I've coughed really hard it allows me to sleep. After I get a cold or sinus infection the clearing of the throat is worse and last for months after the infection is gone. Eventually, slowly, over time it gets better but never completely goes away and only affects me after certain meals again. I'm posting this to let others know what I have experienced in case they have experienced the same thing.

acid reflux
I would have to agree with that. All the women in my family have it, I was diagnosed with it when I was 11. You may want to go to the doctor because it can cause some long term problems if it goes unnoticed. I get frequent heart burn from it, it's not fun at all!

Constand throat clearing following a cold
It's driving me mad - well, to be honest, I'm more worried about how annoying it must be for everyone else. I had a cold a few weeks ago and ever since then I've felt the need to constantly clear my throat. I only feel relief for a few seconds, then it feels like there's something there again, like a tiny slither of phlegm just hanging down the back of my throat. I can't cought it out whatever it is.

i to have had the clearing of the throat diease,is was driving me nuts.then i saw on the net someone who was having success, because they were treating them selves for candida.i releized that all my problems started after a bad bout of bronchitis and 3 lots of antibiotics.so i went to the chemist to day, and got nilstat 1 ml, 4 times a day.i feel better after 1 day.i am told the yeast grows on the back of your throat ,no wonder i could nt cough it up.i ll finish the nilstat, then start the bottle of innerhealth.that should get the body back in balance.i will let you know.

I am no doctor, but it does sound like it could be G.E.R.D (I can't stand that acronym, but it is what it is). I never knew why after a meal, specifically anything with milk, anything tomato based, spicy, or fried, that I would feel like I had phlegm in my throat, and had to clear it. Not only that, I felt like I would growl at people when I talked to them after meals. I teach, so it is particularly difficult to conduct a lecture after lunch unless I eat something very, very bland!
