I've had a constant need to clear my throat for a few years now. There is actually mucous in the form of a post nasal drip so I know it is not neurological. It seems to get worse particularly after a meal. I've gone to an ent and allergist and no one seems to have an answer. It is really only an annoyance to me and others but I want to be sure i'm not damaging my throat by always claring it. It doesn't hurt or feel sore.
Do I have any options with how I can be helped? Thanks!

Sounds like acid reflux. Do a search on acid reflux, and you'll see your syptoms are acid reflux disease, or gerd

Throat clearing after eating
Acid reflux comes from the stomach. Post nasal drip comes from the sinus cavities in the face around the nose. They drain down the back of the throat. I suffer from the same condition. Antihistamines work but only the older ones that cause drowsiness work for me and I can't afford to be drowsy at work.
I originally thought it was due to a food group (dairy products) but now it occurs with anything I eat.

I found the following link very helpful about possible causes. It's dated February 2012. In my case, it might be reflux, even though I don't have the usual reflux symptoms (burning, chest pain):

constant clearing throat
That is the same problem I have. I thought it was due to bread or products with yeast, but lately I have noticed it is after any meal. I try to cough to clear my throat. I do believe it is nasal drainage. I have tried drinking a glass of water with a little apple cider vinegar. I also take a teaspoonful of honey to sooth the throat. Both seem to work until the next meal.

Thanks. It seems others have said the same thing. I guess I will try a couple months of proton pump inhibitors to see if they help. Funny how I dont have any reflux symptoms such as burning or heartburn but I guess I can still have reflux.

I did have a friend though who had it worse than me and he eliminated sugar and white flour as much as he could from his diet and he no longer has the problem.

I was on proton pump inhibitiors for years. My throat clearing just got worse as time went on. Doing online research, I found out that heartburn symtoms can happen because of to LOW of acid as well as to much. I stopped the ppi's and switched to betain hydrochloride (stomach acid in a pill from a health food store). My throat clearing has stopped by 98% and I have only had 5-6 episodes of heartburn in the past year. What's to loose? Good luck.

Throat Clearing Especially After Eating
I feel the need to clear my throat after eating, a condition I have not always had. When I was younger I had none of these problems. I went through a period where I had asthma attacks and was prescribed Nasacort. I only mention that because I've heard this problem associated with asthma. I have gone to throat specialist and they find nothing. I have been allergy tested, barium-swallow-tested, I've had a doctor put a camera up my nose and down my throat to see if they could see anything and there was nothing. I've been put on Prilosec, Singulair, all sorts of allergy meds and none have helped. I'm not sure why but for 1/2 an hour after I eat I am constantly clearing my throat. I also notice that when I lay down in bed and start to relax I have an urge to cough and I do so and after I've coughed really hard it allows me to sleep. After I get a cold or sinus infection the clearing of the throat is worse and last for months after the infection is gone. Eventually, slowly, over time it gets better but never completely goes away and only affects me after certain meals again. I'm posting this to let others know what I have experienced in case they have experienced the same thing.

I used to have this as well, and since I was introduced to an amazing nutritional cleansing program---this irritation completely stopped within a week of being on this system. If you'd like to know more...email me

Exactly the same thing for me. I always say, after eating anything, "Now you'll have to listen to me cough and clear my throat for the next 1/2 hour!" It doesn't matter what or where I eat. Even an all natural, organic restaurant gave me the same reaction. So I am thinking it is something in the esophagus...Like the LPR that was described where acid backs up your throat but doesn't give you heartburn... or it may be leaky gut syndrome, which I have suspected I have for a long time. I have tried eliminating certain foods, but I still drink coffee and wine, so will try cutting back on that. I have tons of food allergies that probably contribute too. I just want relief! There is so much drainage it almost chokes me sometimes. I feel like I want to take a baster and suck it out! I hope someone has a good answer.

I would have to agree with that. All the women in my family have it, I was diagnosed with it when I was 11. You may want to go to the doctor because it can cause some long term problems if it goes unnoticed. I get frequent heart burn from it, it's not fun at all!

Not to mention the fact that you could end up with Barrett's esophagus if you don't get it treated. Barrett's is a pre-cancerous changing of the esophageal lining. You DON'T want that! Also keep in mind, not all people with GERD (aka reflux) have heartburn as a symptom...

Constand throat clearing following a cold
It's driving me mad - well, to be honest, I'm more worried about how annoying it must be for everyone else. I had a cold a few weeks ago and ever since then I've felt the need to constantly clear my throat. I only feel relief for a few seconds, then it feels like there's something there again, like a tiny slither of phlegm just hanging down the back of my throat. I can't cought it out whatever it is.

HELP!!!

Have you yet found some sort of cure for what your going through? Our symptoms sound very much the same and I'm so tired of feeling this way. I also have a small tickle associated with this in my throat. Especially worse when eating diary at night.

I'm trying to help my son who has this problem and it's making life really difficult. It absolutely happens after he eats, and he can't sleep often because of it. He reads forums all the time, but your symptoms sure sound like his. Your post is from June 21, 2009, so were you able to get rid of the problem or does it still persist? I'm surprised at the number of people who have this problem.

I am no doctor, but it does sound like it could be G.E.R.D (I can't stand that acronym, but it is what it is). I never knew why after a meal, specifically anything with milk, anything tomato based, spicy, or fried, that I would feel like I had phlegm in my throat, and had to clear it. Not only that, I felt like I would growl at people when I talked to them after meals. I teach, so it is particularly difficult to conduct a lecture after lunch unless I eat something very, very bland!

constant throat clearing help please
I have this same problem and literally can't eat. I am wasting away to nothing. Doc doesn't think it is GERD I have had every test done besides the pH test which is the next step. He said I dont think its GERD but try Nexium to see if that helps. Okay does that make any sense? I am so frustrated and hope that I dont end up in the hospital. I am only having smoothies with rice milk so no dairy, pudding with rice milk, baby food and poached eggs. I am a mess. Nothing I take helps me what so ever. I was also tested for allergies it is fine. If I dont find something to help me soon I am going to end up with a feeding tube and I am 34 years old 100 pounds. 5'4". It started after my antiobiotics from bronchitis and I havent been right since. I am taking probiotics to try to help. I am so upset and stressed out about this. I am going on about 4 weeks of not eating. I have had some food, not much. Grilled fish and steamed veggies once a week. I dont know what to do any help would be much appreciated! Thanks

I have the same problem. It is awful. I have not been right since my bout with pnumonia. I was on lots of antibiotics, in the hospital for 5 days. I was told I have gerds. It is not acid, but Phlem in my throat constantly. I think I have something from antibiotics also. It is so annoying. My throat burns sometimes from clearing Plemb. I contantly get up at night and just after I eat.

Throat clearing problem
I have had the throat clearing problem for about 6 months and read all sorts of stuff. Went to the doctor and he said sinus and told me to get sinus med. The only solution which really helped was "oil of Oregano", echinacea tincture, silver water, vitamin C. You decide how much. I was doing them before each meal but am down to once every couple days. I do get exercise. I know I wanted a solution as this is a real problem that needs a solution.. I do hope this helps others.. Barry.

I also have the same problem. I had figured out, that every time I eat. I feel the need to clear out my throat constantly. Like something is stock in my throat. It is really annoying, but not only for me, but for other people around me. Because it is kind of embarassing to be doing this in front of people after every meals. I haven't tried to take any medications for it. But I had notice one thing, that once I started to control my diet, I wanted to lose weights and did Exercises and Eat mostly salads, white meat, fish and vegetables, less fatty foods. I quite noticed that, it stops for a while. But as soon as I gained back weight, obviously by eating bad food again, the problem came back. So, I really would like to get help for this issue.

I have had this problem since I was 25 and I am now much, much older. They just call it post nasal drip. I have in the past had polyps removed from my nose, but now it is just constant clearing of my throat. I feel like I am choking if I don't. I quit drinking milk, but it doesn't seem to help. I also feel embarrased around others, but most of them say it bothers me more than them. I also find that when you want to be especially quiet it bothers you the most - nerves, I would say.

Throat Clearing Problem
I do have throat clearing problem for about seven years. I went to the ENT specialists and allergists too. They weren't able to help me. I do have this problem anytime, specially when I am on bed. I tried different solutions but in vain. I gargle with salt solved warm water twice each day both from mouth and from nose also. That is helping me. I don't know if it is not healthful to gargle salt water from nose. Is there any durable solution to this problem?

constant throat clearing, cough, phlem, possible heartburn
I just cant figure out whats wrong with me. For the past year i have to constantly clear my throat. i have a small amount of phlem build up in the back of my throat and a cough because of it. They have tried everything with me such as nasal washes, nasal steroids, mucus and cough relief pills, allergy meds including claritan and benadryl. now they want me to try advair to see if that helps. if i dont clear my throat i cant swallow right and it gives me a choking feeling. it is not just a sensation, there really is phlem there and its not post nasal drip and its constant. strange thing is that i sleep just fine. problem starts within 10 to 15 minutes of waking up. those meds did nothing for me. I have been also taking a lot of heartburn meds to see if that helps. i am now taking prilosec otc. Nothing so far has helped. I dont feel like i have any burning in my throat like heartburn but when i swallow food or drinks it does hurt now going down my esphagus. i dont know if this is because its so irritated because of my lengthly problem with my throat. This is causing me so much anxiety. If anyone out there has the same problem and has found some relief please let me know. next thing they want to try is taking me off heart medicine that i have been on for 12 years. this seems crazy to try because ive only had the problem with my throat for a year. i dont need to have heart problems arise from stopping usage of my toprol. thank you,

did you find a remedy
did you find a remedy for your throat issue? I was on a cruise ship and got the various things going around the ship and the doctor on the ship put me on antibiotics to clear a chest infection, then another round when i still had a tickly throat and sinus thing everyone on the ship seemed to be getting. Since then (6 weeks ago)the tickiling, throat clearing had never completely gone away and somedays gets really bad and i think oh god i hope i don't have to go on antibiotics again. Also i have always suffered from a throat clearing issue after eating certain foods all my life but this seems to be a more constant thing i now have. I would like to know if you discovered what the problem was as i am wondering if it is a yeast issue from antibiotics. I do have a constant post natal drip though but only since being on the antibiotics
