The first thing anyone should know about hpv is that it is the most common sexually transmitted disease/virus out there.
When I found out I had hpv, I had no knowledge of it, and I was very upset and ashamed. But I started researching hpv and became less and less ashamed, even comfortable with having it. The truth is, in women between the ages of 15 and 40, about 80% of them will have hpv at some point in their lives. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell if a guy has hpv, and there are no symptoms or repurcussions for a guy either.
I was 19 when I found out I had hpv. I asked my nurse if there was any way to tell who gave it to me. Since hpv can remain dormant for years, there is no way to find out exactly who gave it to you, although i'm 99% sure I know who gave it to me.
I went through 2 colposcopies and 2 rounds of cryotherapy before I had a normal pap smear. The colposcopy doesn't hurt; in fact it really didn't feel like much of anything. The cryotherapy was very uncomfortable for me, like a really really really bad menstral cramp. But other than that, I had no side effects.
I recently had another pap smear, a year and a half after my last cryotherapy. It came back normal! The nurse said they will keep an eye on it for 5 years, but I should have normal pap smears from here on out.
The one thing you should remember about hpv is that nearly everyone has it! It's nothing to be ashamed of and it's nothing to be fearful of - unless you don't get it treated. If you leave it untreated, you may get cervical cancer. Just be sure to get annual pap smears and you will be fine.
