Hello there,

i've been browsin these forums for about a year now and always found your posts very informative and usefull.

First off i'm 28 and had a discectomy (l5-s1 region) about 6 years ago. I'm almost positive that I reinjured my back at work about a month ago (lifting) and am looking to have my disc replaced. I've read your posts on your most recent surgery w/great results. But in the thread a couple ways down you talk about your surgery gone wrong? Is this related to your disc replacement? Any info would be great. Disc replacement is probly my next step so if you could drop a line or two that would be great also.

Thnx

Hello,

yes, I have had complications with the charite adr surgery. The actual surgery has been a success as far as the placement and stability of the disk but a new/exsisting problem surfaced because of the maintained mobility at the disk space. As crazy as that may sound, the facet joints and associated nerves have also surfaced as problematic because the disc is no longer the pain generator.

Dr. Webb is curently assisting j&j in creating a segmntal joint to completely replace the vertabre and associated bone because the mobility is good but they are having to do alot of nerve removal along with the disc replacement since unlike with fusion, a full range of motion is maintained and can be painful.

I would always recommend the disc over fusion but in the end it is up to you, your doctor and of course the all mighty insurance company.

Good luck and keep up informed as to how you mak out.
