Q: Historectomy - Helpful Or Added Problems?

I like to hear from anyone out there , ladies that had a hystorectomy, on how they feel afterwards? I ask because I have heard som scary stories of "pain" after the surgery , pain for years. Another thing I found from ladies that had the operation is, that they suffered tremendeous weight gains in many cases. I asked my doctor about that but she won't discuss this with me for some reason. So I thought I make my own survey and speak to people that actually have experienced this invasive surgery themselfes. I am 68 years old and surgery might very well be my only option but I still like to gather as much information as I can.

Hysterectomy - Helpful Or Added Problems?
Hi, I am 44 years old with 2 kids. I had a complete hysterectomy including my cervex 3 years ago due to vaginal prolapse. I didn't have to have a complete one at the time but due to the risk of cancer in my ovaries and cervex I decided to go with the whole sha-bang. I am glad it was done :d . I found out after the surgery that my ovaries were full of cysts. I don't have pain except for when start of intercourse (a little dry) but it passes. I am on premarin daily for menopausal symtoms. I hate to think what my body would be like if I hadn't had it. I hope this helps, good luck with your decision.

Re: Historectomy
Thank you so much, edmonton. B the way I am in kingston, ontario. Hello neighbor far away. It sounds like you are doing well, I am very happy for you. Was very interested to read about your health history. You didn't mention anything about gaining weight after your surgery so I take it there was none? I know a few ladies that hat the procedure done and who gain much weight. Some look pregnant all the time, it just made me think. Also, if you gain so much then diabetis could be next. I heard of one case and she hurts now all the time. Could be that a mistake was being made at the time of surgery?
Thank you again for your prompt reply

I didn't gain any weight at all. I think the old saying everything in moderation, in this case food. I actually have a low thyroid too and that is causing me to slowly put on some weight. Anyway, tell your friend to ask your dr for a copy of your surgical report/transcript (you is entitled to see it). If you know anyone who can go through it with you. I don't think you should have pain all the time. I had a friend who had a hysterectomy a year before me and she is doing fine too. She had one because she had endometriosis.
P.S. Nice to hear from a fellow canadian.

Hi there! I had a complete hysterectomy in 1997 due to cancer. I told them to take ovaries and all because I did not want nothing hiding, and I did bot want to come back to have my ovaries removed, I had some surgeries before and after and it was the best surgery I had ever had, no more periods, I whizzed thru the change of life, I was totally out of it ffor the 1st couple of days, I gained a little weight but not much. I was up, moving around the third day, I had pain but was given enough meds to keep it mainly under control but I had just goten over a neck surgery also. I have pain now but that is because of other reasons.
May I ask why at 68 years young you or your drs feel that a hysterectomy might be your only option? Do you have cancer too?
And of course you know that you do not have to answer.
Remember that all women are different.

Re: Historectomy
Hello sandy; I don't mind you asking at all. Yes I am also flabberghasted to have to have a hystorectomy so late in life. No , to your question, the reason is not cancer at all. My problem is a prolapsed uterus which started to manifest itself or better show itself over a year ago. Thats when I became aware of this, my problem.
I do have another problem now and that is that my doctor can't give me a date with a gynocologist until maybe a year from now. Then , if lucky, I can get an appointment which takes another 6-8 month she said.
We live in a prominent university city with some of the best doctors in the land and yet our town has ca. 2000 people without a family physician. That gives you an idea why the waiting time is so endlessly long. Because of the fact that I can't get an opportunity to see and speak to an expert in the field I don't know what really needs to be done on me, however , I researched my case on the internet and it looks as though hystorectomy will be the only solution. I am in the 'second degree' of prolapse (cervix is sticking through). It can go up to "fourth degree' in time, which I naturally try to avoid. However, with such a long wait for surgery, who knows what will happen in the meantime? The side effects in my case are: back ache, starting to loose controll of bladder, trouble walking. Not so great. I was told by my doctor that, after all, my case is not a life threatening desease and therefore my wait is longer.

My mother just had a hysterectomy for a prolapsed uterus last week, age 75. They did it vaginally, so she did not have to have abdominal surgery, and she was up and around in about 4 days, just not allowed to do anything strenuous or lift heavy objects for a few weeks -- as if she would anyway! Lol.

I don't think there would be any reason why you should gain weight, if you are already past menopause anyway.

Re: Hystorectomy
Thank you poopoo from the u.K. ! (by the way I am in a gardening web site in the u.K. As well)
glad to hear that your mother fared so well with er h. Surgery experience. Grateful to hear that gaining weight is not a problem for afterwards. Could get nothing much out of my own doctor in this regard. It also was suggested by my doctor (grudgingly) that they can do it vaginally here too. But like I mentioned already, the problem is "when??"
the way it looks now I have to wait 1 1/2 year with nothing concrete like an appointment yet. Worrysome.

Dry vagina
I do not know the technical word for the problem. My menses stoped three years back and had a problem of utress comming down. This is corrected with some medicine amd Yoga. Now my vagina is dry and and I feel paining even inserting my finger to vagina. I cannot have intercourse and my husband is semi-satisfied with forplay and I have no enjoyment.

What can I do to overcome this problem. Please help me.
I am an Indian and eat average indian food with less chilly.
Thanks

historectomy
I just turned 30 and ive been told that i need a historectomy, I have 2 perfect kids and cant have anymore even without the surgery, I dont know what to do, im in constant pain and want it to be all over, but im scared of this step, its very deffinate. How long is the recovery period? does any one know? Is it similar to a c-section? I had 2 of those and did well but this seems worse, Im scared. I hope someone has some advice that will make me feel a little more at ease with the whole thing.

historectomy
Im 42 and have Just had a historectomy because of fibroids and uncontrolled bleeding, pain and a history of endometreosis. The operation was intended to be vaginal but due to some complications was converted to abdoninal. I was up and walking 16 hours after surgery and left hospital on day 3. I have used paracetamol for pain releif and feel no worse than after a c-section. I think its worth it
