Q: Incompetent Cervix

I was dignosed with incompetent cervix. I run the risk of it opening up prematurely. This scares me! I read that if you suffer from incompetent cervix you should see your doctor every two weeks starting at 14 weeks. My doctor is waiting until I am 22 weeks. Has anyone had this?

I have had a short cervix before, which means that the further I was along the more the baby would come. I had to be on bed rest starting at 5 months I had my daughter when I was 8 months and she was very healthy is weighed 5 pounds 6.3 ounces. And now i'm pregnant again I hope I will go full term.

Switch Doctors!!!
I don't know why your doctor would wait that long because it usually starts to thin around 18-20 weeks. I know this because I have lost 2 babies due to an incompetent cervix. I delivered a boy at 23 weeks, and a girl just recently at 21 weeks. Neither one of my babies were old enough to survive. It took losing 2 babies before I was diagnosed. Just 2 weeks before my last delivery I had an ultrasound, and my cervix was thick and closed. In a matter of those 2 short weeks, things had changed that quickly! Please seek a second opinion, or you could go through what I went through, and trust me, it's the worst thing a mother could experience.
I am in indiana too, if we are close enough, I could recommend a really good doctor. Good luck!!!

incompetent cervix
sam, I lost my second child at 20 weeks due to an incompetent cervix. I then became pregnant with my 3rd child and switched doctors and not until then I was diagnosed with that obstacle. Now I am pregnant again and I had a cerclage at 14 weeks and and I see my ob every 2 weeks and once I reach 7mths I will be visiting him every week. I really agree with what the other comment you really need to seek another professional because losing a baby is devestating.

Short Cervix
I am just wondering if this is the same as incompetent cervix. I had the Leep in 2005 and now I am 17 weeks. Went to the doctor today and they are having me come back for another U/S friday bc the cervix is short but just border line short and they want to watch it.

Incompetent Cervic = miscarriage @ 16 wks!
I lost my son @ 16 weeks of my pregnancy, and was diagnosed after with the incompetent cervix. My OBGYN said most doctors will wait after several miscarriages to diagnose this, but b/c I had a "classic case" she was very certain IC is the problem. We had decided with my next pregnancy we will place the cerclage sometime between 9- 11 weeks. Since then, I think I may want to place the cerclage sooner..but will talk with my DR further. I'm still waiting for the RIGHT time to get prenant again....everytime we start trying again, I get very worried, and change my mind. I cant decide if I should face my fears and go ahead, of if I should just wait!

I have a short cervix as well, and the doctors were concerned about it shortening and the dialting too early, causing me to go into preterm labour. Even with that, I saw my doctor every 2 weeks from 17 weeks to 27 weeks and then once a week from then on...so if you don't think your doctor is doing the right thing, make an appointment and tell him or her and if they don't do what you need, find a new one. Dont risk your baby for a stupid doctor!

Short cervix- I had a LEEP to. I was on light bed rest from 17-27 weeks, then my cervix continued to shorten to just 1cm in length, and was on full bedrest, hospitalized on and off from 28 weeks to 36 weeks. I saw my doctor on a regular basis, lots of ultrasounds, non stress tests ect...listen to your body, it will tel lyou if theres a problem...thats how I found out my cervix shortened more, I felt weird and went in. Nothing ever happened though, my son was born at 40 weeks and 1 day, 7lbs 7oz. They say when I have another, they will only put me on bedrest if I need to be on it, that they now know I have a short cervix and they will just watch it and go from there, its not the same as an incompetent cervix though, with that your cervix just dilates uncontrollably, it can be much more serious.
