My brand new doctor prescribed me paxil today. I am not a realy big pill person. So I am wondering if this is worth bothering with. I suffer from severe anxiety most days and have for the past few months. I am concerned about side effects of the drug. I have been in a state of depression while coping or trying to cope with the anxiety and have gained way too much weight, so I am not needing or interested in gaining anymore. If paxil does cause you to blow up like a balloon, can anyone else tell me a different alternative. I have to get this under control. I plan on following up with some individual therapy, which I think will help. But, it seems everyone wants to write a prescription for everything now and I am not willing to take anything that I am not comfortable with. The doctor told me that the side effects of paxil were possible decreased sexual drive, and drowsiness. Is that accurate or a total line of crap? Please let me know anything to might about this drug and if this drug does have a ton of side effects, can you please tell me if there is one that might have less? Thanks so much! Jen

Paxil
All anti-anxiety/anti-depressant medications have side-effects, and they are all pretty much similar. That is not to say that you will experience any side effects at all though. The majority of people don't, or if they do they are so minor as to be completely untroublesome.

The best advice I can give you, and this is from experience, is to trust your doctor and take the tablets. Don't research the side effects because you will just worry yourself over things that you most likely will not experience. Sometimes too much information can be a bad thing, and particularly for an anxiety sufferer as they are predisposed to worrying.

Consider the anxiety you suffer from and how devastating an effect it can have on your life. Then think that these tablets might hold the cure for you. Surely it's worth risking a couple of minor side effects if you could get your life back?

Rest assured that many many anxiety sufferers have been in the same position as you (myself included) and you just need to take a leap of faith, take the tablets and see how you get on with them. Either that or you sort of run out of options for treatment, because like I said all the anti-anxiety meds have similar side effects. Some work better than others for some people, but you never know until you try them.

Hope this helps, take care... :-)
