Teen Pregnancy Forum - Down Syndrome

Has anyone been told they are at risk for having a down syndrome baby? I just got told on the 1st that my last ultrasound showed that the babies nuchal fold was a little big (high end of good is 6mm and my babies was 7mm). My doctor said he was going to send me back for another ultrasound soon, to have it rechecked. We also decided on not having an amniosentesis, it increases the risk of having a misscarriage, and I don't plan on aborting the baby (it doesn't matter if I had planned on it, because I am to far along) but i've heard a lot of stories from family and friends since I found out this news that people they know where told the same thing and the baby came out healthy. I'm just kind of upset and scared. It's totally not news that I was expecting, and I had my ultrasound several weeks ago...So I thought when they didn't call back the hump was over. Not to mention they called the night before my 18th birthday...Lol! I thought that was a crappy gift. But I talked to my doc and things seem a little better now, but I was wondering if anyone on here had any information, etc.

Kimmeh, at 16 weeks did you not have the mss test done? This tells you what percentage there is that your baby could be at risk for down syndrome, trisomy 18 and an open neural tube defect. It's optional.
The test goes by your last regular period and is also based on your age.

I had that test come back 1 in 8,000 with my first son(age 17) and was told at first that with my second it was 1 in 116! That was pretty scary...They made a mistake by my lmp. It turned out to be 1 in 10,000.

No I didn't have that test done, and it was never offered to me...There was a different test offered to me on the same day as I got the referral sheet to get the ultrasound done, and they told me to think about it, but I chose no, because I didn't want to be stressed about the unessesary...Lol I probably wouldn't have gotten these results back anyways before the other test that was offered to me. Thanks for your help.

sorry for the really long wait...I forgot that I was going to make an update for this. Basically a couple weeks after that ultrasound at 19 weeks I went to a specialist and they did a very intence long medical ultrasound. They looked at everything. And when they came back they said that everything looked perfect. The heart was shaped nicely and all the valves were there and connected, there was no holes, etc. The limbs were of good size (sometimes people with down syndrome will have a shorter limb, such as an arm, etc.). The only thing they were unable to check was the nuchal fold because after 20 weeks it isn't accurate anymore. So they said with there findings and with my age that it comes down to about a 1 percent chance of the baby having down syndrome...Or like the girl said...A 99 percent chance of it not.

I still think about it every once in a while, it'll be awful if she's in that 1% catagory...But I doubt she will, and no matter what I will still love her. But yeah I try not to dwell on it to much and stress about it.

i was just wanting to add this thread a little bit ...

My cousin was told her baby could possibly be down syndrome...We worried and worried about it..While she went into labor thats all the family could worry about ...Then when he came out ...He was perfectly normal...So sometimes doctors are wrong..I thought maybe this story might calm some people that have been told this ... :wink:

Im sure everything will be alright my friends mom had the amnio thing and they told her my friend was very likely down syndrome and they almost aborted her but she came out just fine.

I've had the test done and I have to go in actually tommorow to genetics because the father of my baby's little brother has down syndrome so they want to run more test. Probally do an amniotecetics I think thats how its spelled...Lol

Goodluck buddahbelly :) I am sure everything will be okay. All i've heard are about a million stories of how doctors have said that people are going to have a down syndrome baby and they don't. Obviously the testings are not very accurate. So I wish you the best of luck! Don't stress too much, and let us know how it goes.

Hey yall well I went to the doc today and they havent gotten my results in yet for the test they did. But the lady told me she dosent think I should be at any risk for the baby to hav down syndrome so... Yippppppe

I'm in the same situation. I took the triple blood test and they said that my baby is at risk of down syndrome. I started to freak out at first so I called my ob/gyn and talked to my nurse which calmed me down a whole lot. On jan. 19th I had my u/s done and they said that everything looked good. But the only way I can know for sure is to have an amnio. But i'm confident that everything is healthy so i'm not going 2. Plus it turns out that the test is less than 70% accurate and that it shows up positive for a lot of women, where in the end nothing is wrong. So imagine the people that decided never to have the test and everything turns out fine, but us that decided to have it are left freakin about the results and everything turns out fine. Azlso it's not that common to have an down syndrome baby at a young age and if there's no family history everythings most likely fine.
