Massive Rectal Bleeding In My 6wk Old Girl ...
Posted: 11-02-05 15:55pm

I've just returned from the hospital with my 6 wk old girl after 3 days there. On sat. Morning I woke up and changed her diaper and there was a small amount of blood in it. I didn't panic, called the Dr. And waited more than 2 hours for their call...In that period of time, she had another bowel movement (or I thought) after grunting for 10 minutes, and I changed it to find the entire diaper full of bright red blood. No bowel movements at all. I have never been so scared in my life. I rushed her to the er and after 3 days of poking and prodding, my poor little angel looks like a pin cushion. They ran numerous tests, I saw 3 different md's from the pediatricians office we take her to, and a gi specialist as well.

They have determined that it must be an allergy to milk, soy and all milk products that made her bleed, and that to continue breast feeding I need to cut out all milk products, and we need to supplement her with nutramigen formula (hypoalargenic)also. They ran x-rays and stool cultures, and labs. She is now anemic with all the blood loss and is on iron drops, and zantac to help her stomach.

My question is for anyone who may have had this happen, or know about it: can this really be true? There were 5 diapers on sat. That were entirely filled from front to back with bright red blood. She is still passing mucusy dark red blood with stool currently, which is why I am so freaked out that they dc'd her. They were prepared to let us go yesterday with the confidence that she'd get better little by little this week, but I refused till we got to see the gi md. He agreed that it was most likely an allergy.

How long do I wait to take her back to er or start making the dr's look further if the bleeding isn't stopping. Also, they said do just nutramigen formula for 3-5 days while I "cleanse" my body of dairy, and just pump and dump. I am afraid my milk is already in jeopardy because I havn't been feeding or pumping regularly the entire weekend. I just can't help thinking it's the other way around - that she's allergic to something in all formulas, not my milk - am I just being wishful ????

I am so scared - this is what it's going to be like forever now, a parent's worry....

Thanks for any help in advance, kim v

This has happened to my daughter. It all started in the hospital when vanessa couldn't digest the similac with iron, it cureled in her mouth. So the nurses suggested isomil the soy version. Well thats when all hell broke lose. She started with prejectial vomitting and rectal bleeding with mucus. I took her to the doctor and the doctor confirmed that she was allergic to soy.... So from that point on she was drinking allimentium for allergy babies. $$$$$$$. Everthing cleared up and she was on this formula for months and then we switched to carnation good start.

Unfortunately it was a start to having allergies to other foods. At 2 I had her tested by an allergist and he founf that she was allergic to milk, eggs and nuts. She is almost 4 and is doinf great. Email me if you have any more questions sabse rdanvan@yahoo.Com

I just couldn't believe the amount of blood. Also, they said that they "tested" her for milk allergies and that it came back ok, but still insisted that it didn't always show up, and that they were sure it was that. The dc paperwork says "colitis" on it. It's so frustrating.

I guess this is what it is like to have a child. Always worrying about them, day and night. I still don't have all the answers, and hope it's not anything internal that they can't/didn't see. I made an appt. For a pediatric allergy md for next tues. I think that they should have encouraged me to do so, but I made the decision on my own and called them.

I hate relying on others to feel safe and reassured. I hope that they can really conclusively tell me more after that visit.

Thanks again for replying, any help is always appreciated. Kim v
