Q: Some Help Please

Hey i'm a 23 year old male and I was diagonosed with epilepsy when I was younger. After sometime of no epileptic activity they started leaning me off my depakote, and I havent had any seizure activity since I was about 14. Now heres my problem, lately i've been suffering from memory loss, i'm having the hardest time remembering everything. Its been very rapid over the past few months. I mean like theres just being absent minded and this is by far much worse than that. Its effecting my performance at work, now heres my scenario. Say I go get a eeg done just by looking at it they could tell I used to have epilepsy right? Like it would be obvious that something was out of place? I ask because I could lose my job if it were to turn up with a health history. Has anyone heard of something like this? How about dormant epilepsy does that exist? Hopefully this isnt leading up to something worse than just memory loss. Maybe read any articles on anything related? Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated thanks.

There can be a lot of subtle seizures that you might not realize you are having...

I would just talk to your regular doctor about the memory loss. Could be a lot of things and not just your epilepsy coming back....

Best wishes for answers!

Hi wheresmykeys.

I'm no expert but here's my shilling's worth:

during an eeg the technician will ask you to "close your eyes", "open your eyes", "breath deaply" etc etc..

Afterwards, when the neuro looks at the eeg print-out he/she should be able to spot any unusual activity that took place during the session.

From simply looking at your eeg report (without knowledge of your medical history) there is no way of knowing if the abnormal activity was there 1 month or 1 year ago.
Your historical data is known only by you and your neurologist.
Dunno where you're from, but usually that's all very confidential stuff.

From just looking at an eeg report it would be presumptious to say he/she has had epilepsy for x amount of months/years.

If however, you go for a cat or mri scan it is quite normal to make certain assumptions.
Let's say the imagery shows substantial scarring then it would be obvious that the scarring didn't appear overnight. Bar an accident fo sorts. Hence the symptoms of epilepsy could have been obvious for some time.
But even then, it is possible that the patient never experienced anything strange.

I hope you find you keys.
:-)
