I'm a 26 year old male. I've been having some urinary difficulty lately--some days I have to strain to go, somedays i'm constantly going. I have no pain, no fever, no other symptoms. At first it was believed that I had prostatitis, a condition i've had before. This time the antibiotics did not clear it up. Yesterday, my doctor did a urine test and said that I have protein in my urine. He didn't seem concerned and suggested that it was probably an infection/kidney inflammation. He suggested that I see a urologist.

My wife is a rn and works at a hospital with many doctors every day--she talked to 3 urologists today, and none of them seemed overly concerned, just suggesting that I get it looked at by a nephrologist. (sp?) I suffer from severe panic and anxiety attacks, as well as ocd. I've convinced myself that I have kidney cancer or kidney failure. (one urologist said that the likelihood of it being cancer was almost nothing)

should I be worried? I have an appointment with a nephrologist on 11/30/2005.

Is it possible that it's just some sort of infection, or is it likely something more serious?

Also, I suffer from chronic gout. I take toprol for high bp, and colchicine and alleve for gout pain. One of the doctors suggested that those things could be the cause of my symptoms....

Question
Symptoms for bladder infections can be very different among people, and most especially amongst the sexes. Some women when they have bladder infections have hardly any symptoms at all (aren't they lucky?), whereas I can barely function because of the intense pain.

When your doctor checked your urine, did he screen for bacteria (or more specifically for the presence of white blood cells)? It's possible that you have a bladder infection, but the symptoms are milder than in most.

That's one option you might want to look at. This can quickly be determined by your doctor in a matter of minutes.

Hope everything works out.
