Recurrent Shoulder Dislocation - Contemplating For Surgery Posted: 10-25-05 09:58am
Hi, I am diagnosed with recurrent shoulder
dislocation. Currently, I am still
contemplating whether I should go for
surgery, so may I have your advice
please.
I dislocated my shoulder twice before.
First – my shoulder dislocated while
playing badminton (performing a smack),
but went back in almost immediately.
Second – while doing pull-ups, my
shoulder dislocated. It took about 2-3
seconds for the shoulder to go back to the
original position.
An mri scan showed a bankart lesion. This
is in accordance with slap pathology. (i
don’t really understand what this means
– i’m just quoting my doctor.)
i can perform my daily activities without
any problem, but the shoulder will feel
unstable in certain awkward positions.
One of the specialists which I saw said
that if my future lifestyle is not going
to involve lots of sports, and since I can
perform my daily activities with ease,
then I should not go for the operation.
The other specialist said that judging
from my mri report, it is likely that the
shoulder will dislocate again. It is just
a matter of time. I should therefore go
for the surgery to prevent further
dislocations because every dislocation
will adversely affect the shoulder
structure.
According to both doctors, the surgery has
a 80-90% success rate.
So, in light of this, may I have your
opinions please. Thank you very much.
