Q: Unknown Food Allergy...(kinda Long)

Hello my name is dave and I am 31yrs old and so is my wife rachel. About 3 yrs ago when rachel and I were dating we went to a nice restaurant in pacifica and had fish and chips. For the first time her tongue started to swell a bit and it began to affect her speech (swollen tongue) after she had the salad with the house made dressing. A little concerned but it totally went away the next day. We had fish and chips at many other places and never had the same effect. There have been a few places that had the same affect but nothing near as bad as the first time and the first time was a little mild. Within the past 4-5 months her unknown allergy has been progressing a bit. Each time this happens it's always when we eat out. I know it sounds like we eat a lot of fish but we really don't. This happened while we were on our honeymoon in monterey at bubba gump shrimp. Again I think it may be the salad or dressing. We had fish and chips and a british pub (bulley's I think) which was probably the best i've ever had in my life and she was totally unaffected. A couple of days later down in morrow bay we had fish and chips again and there was no affect at all. Back home a couple of months later we had fish and chips at the only real fish and chip place like 30 miles away and she started having a very minor reaction. At this point it started looking like she may be allergic to soy oil. Soy oil was the first ingredient for the tarter sauce and they deep fried it in soy oil! This is like our favorite local place and now it doesn't look like we or she can eat there :lol: not really funny. When we cook at home this never usually happens. She had the first flare up while eating a can of soup that she's eaten several times before. Again soy oil was one of the 1st ingredients listed. Than it happened with margerine (soy bean oil). So now we're thinking we have a pretty good idea what she's allergic to. Pure butter does not contain soy oil so we have to start using that instead. Certain dressings including ranch are starting to affect her. Then about 2 weeks ago we were thrown a total curve ball :? We went out to a new hamburger joint called "fat burger" in our area. The food was great in my opinion. She had a burger, fries and a strawberry shake. She usually doesn't have ketchup with her fries but this time she did. Within a couple of fries she started to have another reaction. She immediately stopped eating the ketchup and just ate them plain. We later confirmed that they don't use soy oil to cook the fries. They use conola oil. This reaction started to get worse fast. For the first time I was really freaked out because she almost totally lost her voice! I knew what was next. She thought it was kind of funny but I was not laughing. We left and went to go get gas in my car across town and it didn't really get any worse. She did have some red spots on her tongue going all the way back and spreading out wider. About 15mins later she than had severe breathing problems and I was now officially freaked out :shock: ! She took some benidryl (misspelled) and I gave her a shot of primeatine mist. This helped her breathing after a few what seemed like forever moments. It has been nearly 2 weeks and her voice has not fully recovered. Well earlier today it was the best it has been since this happened but then she had some freshly cut pineapple that she cleaned and cut herself. Again she had another breathing episode. We are all but clueless on what on earth she is allergic to and it's 4 months away until I am able to add her on to my health insurance coverage. At this point it doesn't look like we're going to make it til then without racking up massive medical bills. We've been very lucky so far but I know it's just a matter of time before it will be a trip to the er. Any input would greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and sorry for the super long 1st post.

Unknown Allergy
I also have an unknown allergy, in new zealand we have good public healthcare so I am waiting to see an imunoligist to hopefully determin what I am infact allergic to. I am on doxepin which was prescribed by my doctor to suprese my reaction until I can see the imunologist, my skin sometimes feels a bit crawly but I never break out into a full allergic reaction. I have been told that it is possible that the allergy in addition to food etc... Could infact be triggered by something environmental emotional or physical.

Wow that's a trip. My wife is actually from new zealand too. Pineapple also causes a reaction but we just learned if it's cooked there's no effect at all. Also when there's a flare up she takes a anahistime and the flare up goes away quick.

My doctor said doxepin has one of the higher antihistamene strengths. It also helps psycollogically to prevent the body reacting to the allergic reaction, I take 2 a day and I have not broken out in months but like I say I can feel in my skin that im reacting to something.

unknown food allergies
DaveLC2, Im so glad that im not in this boat alone, my 5 year old has the same thing going on she keeps reacting to fish, she also reacted to rhubarb, she ate one fry from my other daughter that was cooked with fish, and broke out in hives from head to toe and had trouble breathing, i have taken her to an allergist and they say she is not allergic to fish, but she is soy and peanuts, but she eats soy based stuff all the time and nothing happens, I would really love it if we could stay in touch and see if we cant help each other out im desperite for a answer.
